Synopsis

It was 1995 in the Southern California wasteland.

I was barely legal and far from innocent. I loved The Gun Club more than I loved Walter, my high school sweetheart. He was the only person who knew why I stopped singing and playing guitar after what happened to me when I was 16. But even an engagement ring couldn’t save us after what he did to me that one afternoon.

I used to worry that college would come between us, but I never thought it would happen on move-in day.

That was the day I met Franz : a tall, handsome 23-year-old ex-jock from Germany. He was so not my type, but the more I got to know him, the more I knew he was the right guy for me. And after Walter betrayed me for the last time, it was time for me to break up with him and be with Franz for good. I never thought he’d be a safe place for me to explore my darkest sexual fantasies. Nor that he’d be a kindred spirit who knew exactly what it felt like when someone ridiculed your musical aspirations.

We gonna start playing music together and be who we were meant to be. Nothing and no one was gonna stop us.

Not even Walter.

Note: This is the standalone sequel to Miss World, which was self-published in 2011, and takes place a month later.

Excerpt

The Education of Sebastian Excerpt

My hands were still trembling and I was in danger of tipping the rest of the water onto his pillows. He took the glass from my hands and placed it on the tiny bedside table.

“Come and lie down with me,” he said, tugging gently on my hand. “Just lie with me. I’m not going to do anything you don’t want, you know that.”

He pulled me down and held me in his arms, softly stroking my hair. We lay there peacefully. Somewhere in the room I could hear a clock ticking—my life was passing with every second.

He continued to soothe me, kissing my hair, stroking my back and my arms, threading his long legs through mine.

“Do you want to hear a bedtime story?” he said, quiet humor in his voice.

“Not funny,” I muttered into his chest.

He laughed gently. “You’ll like this one. It starts with a girl and a boy … a motorcycle and a full tank of gas.”

“Very romantic.”

“Told you you’d like it.”

“Well, the boy says to the girl, ‘Hey, baby, let’s go see the world.’ And do you know what the girl says?”

“‘I’m washing my hair’?”

“Ha! No, not quite. She says, ‘Let’s go see Italy because the whole world starts there’.”

“She sounds like an idiot.”

“Hey! This is my bedtime story.”

“Okay, I’ll be quiet.”

“Is that even possible?”

I punched him lightly on the arm and he laughed.

“Okay, so the boy says, ‘I’ve got an idea. Let’s fly to Switzerland…’”

“On the motorcycle? Because I should explain to you…”

He put his hand over my mouth, so I kissed the palm and snuggled in a bit more.

“‘Let’s fly to Switzerland, drive over the Alps and then we’ll go to Milano and see Il Trovatore at La Scala’.”

“That’s the opera where everyone ends up dying.”

“You said you’d be quiet.”

“Sorry.”

“So, then they stay at this amazing hotel where they have breakfast in bed, served on silver plates…”

“And they scappati in the morning because they can’t pay the bill?”

“Yeah! Then they ride off on their trusty motorcycle and go to Verona, one of the most romantic cities in the world…”

“It’s not romantic—that’s where Romeo poisons himself and Juliet stabs herself to death.”

“Shh! Then they drive down the spine of Italy, stopping to eat pasta … and have a lot of sex…”

“This story is NC-17.”

“Yeah, that’s because it’s my bedtime story. Then they ride to Salerno and take this little mountain road to a tiny village called Capezzano Inferiore and they meet all these wonderful, crazy people who turn out to be cousins and aunts and uncles of the girl, because she’s kinda crazy, too…”

“And then what?”

“They live happily ever after.”

I sighed. “Okay, that was a pretty good story after all.”

“Told you you’d like it.”

I felt very comfortable lying in his arms and my attack of guilt and disgust was slowly passing.

He didn’t speak after that and neither did I. We drifted to sleep, wound around each other.

A loud crash woke me suddenly. I sat up, disoriented and panic-stricken in the darkened room.

“Oh, fuck. Mom’s home,” said Sebastian sullenly. “Are you okay, Caro? Don’t sweat it; she won’t come up here.”

My heart was pounding; it was so loud I felt certain he must be able to hear it knocking against my ribs.

“Are you sure? Is your door locked?”

“I haven’t got a lock—I put the chair up against it when I want some privacy.”

I couldn’t believe how casual he sounded. I almost leapt out of my skin when he reached out to stroke my hair.

“I’ll go see if she’s passed out,” he said, reading my mood.

I nodded, nervously twisting my wedding ring around my finger.

He frowned, then rolled off the bed and gently opened his bedroom door. He was gone for less than a minute while I waited anxiously.

“She’s out cold—like I said. No problem.”

He pulled the chair up against the door, letting all the clothes slide off into a heap, then wedged its wooden back tightly under the handle.

He turned slowly, staring down at me.

From the look on his face, I guessed he wanted to cash in the rain check on the make-out session I’d promised him. I definitely wasn’t on the same page; the adrenaline rush caused by Estelle’s noisy return had freaked me out.

I pulled my cell phone out of my jeans pocket and flipped it over to check the time: it was after 1 am.

“It’s late,” I whispered. “I should get back.”

“Stay. Please.”

He sat down next to me again and ran the tips of his fingers down my arm.

“We don’t know when we’ll have another night together,” he said persuasively, kissing my shoulder. “What difference does it make if you go now or in a few hours?”

When he didn’t meet any resistance, he pushed me gently back onto his bed and used his body to press me into the thin mattress. I could feel that he was already aroused. Boy, it didn’t take much. I still felt shaken, but at the same time it thrilled me that I could make him feel that way, make his body respond that way.

“Stay,” he whispered as he ran his tongue up my neck and tugged at my ear lobe with his teeth.

His right hand rode up under my t-shirt and cupped my breast, circling his thumb over my nipple. “Please stay.”

Excerpt

The Education of Caroline Excerpt:

It was dark when I woke up; I realized I wasn’t alone.

“Hey, baby,” he whispered. “I didn’t mean to wake you—I just wanted to see you.”

He was sitting at the bottom of my mattress again. I peered into the dark, his outline faint against the darker shadow of the wall.

I rubbed my gritty eyes and reached out for him. “You’re too far away,” I grumbled, holding up my arms toward him.

He uncoiled himself from the floor, and tried to stretch out next to me, but his boots hit the door.

“Fuck,” he muttered, “they’ve given you a damn hutch to sleep in.”

“At least it’s private, Sebastian,” I said, running my finger across his stubbly chin.

He smiled. “Yeah, that’s something.”

He leaned over me, taking his weight on his arms, and kissed me, softly. I think he just had a simple goodnight kiss in mind; I certainly didn’t.

I wrapped my arms around his neck and locked our faces together. Needing more, I pushed my tongue between his lips, and explored his mouth hungrily. He tasted of salt and mint gum. Desire bloomed inside me and I ran my hands down his back, resting them on his fine ass, feeling the rough material beneath my fingers, and squeezed hard.

“Are you sure, Caro?” he breathed.

“Yes,” I whispered back. “Here and now.”

He groaned softly, and I felt the weight of his body press down onto my chest.

“But you’re going to have to get naked,” I added.

He sighed and pushed back from me.

“It’s going to take some explaining if the Taliban attack and I run out of your room with my ass hanging out,” he replied.

It was a fair point, and he was only trying to protect my honor and act professionally, just as I’d asked. And yet … I weighed up the pros and cons, realized he was right, and decided to strip him anyway.

We’d come under enemy fire today, and faced it together. I realized how lucky I was: surviving had made me damned horny, and I craved a bout of rough, life-affirming sex with my gorgeous fiancé. I felt, quite literally, that life was too short not to grasp something so good with both hands.

This man, lying in my arms, had told me over and over again that he loved me—that he’d always loved me. And, despite everything that fate had thrown in our path—time, distance, and age difference—we were in love. The why and how didn’t seem to matter anymore: finally, finally I’d accepted that this was real and that it wasn’t going to go away—that Sebastian wasn’t going to go away. I’d accepted that he was beautiful and sexy and younger than me; and that women with far better bodies and far fewer years would want him, too. And I’d accepted that he wasn’t perfect, and had a string of conquests on at least three continents; and I’d accepted that life was going to continue to throw new hurdles in our path—and I didn’t damn well care.

It wasn’t perfect: so what? Life isn’t perfect: life is what happens while you’re waiting for your moment in the sun and if you miss it, waiting instead for the perfect illusion that Hollywood sells, then more fool you. I’d spent half my life waiting for the right moment: I was done with waiting.

“Time to get naked, Chief,” I ordered.

“Make me,” he shot back.

The Education of Sebastian and The Education Caroline were intense. Caroline is in a loveless marriage. She is nothing more than a maid, party planner, and warm body for her husband. She has low self esteem and feels this is as good as it will get. Then she meets Sebastian who opens Caroline`s eyes to new passion and new feelings.  She tries to deny the attraction she has for him but eventually gives in. She learns that Sebastian is in fact 17. He turns 18 in a few months but still he is underage. She battles with what is right and what is right for her. Sebastian is in love and will not go easily. Ultimately Caroline gives in and starts her illicit affair. They sneak around and find ways to be together. In the end of The Education of Sebastian they get caught. Caroline must leave and have no contact with Sebastian for three years or his father would press charges and have her sent to prison.
In the Education of Caroline it takes off ten years after Caroline and Sebastian had gotten caught. She left the state, started a new job, changed her name and never looked back. She felt she was doing the right thing for Sebastian by letting him grow up and meet someone his own age. Caroline is doing what she loves. She writes articles for newspapers. The only thing she is missing in her life is Sebastian. But she refuses to dwell on it and decides its best to leave things the way they are. Caroline is sent out on assignment. She was being embedded in a unit for one month to document life for soldiers in Afghan.  During a training session, Caroline runs into Sebastian. He is angry at first. One minute he is doing his best to ignore her the next he is showing up at her hotel room drunk. He is still in love with her. Now he needs to show her once and for all that age doesn’t matter and they still belong together.
This story was well written It was like I was there I could picture the scenes as the writer described. The characters were believable. Some were lovable and some were…well you just want to smack them!
The only part I did not like was that Caroline continued an intimate relationship with Sebastian even after learning he was underage. Even though he would turn 18 in a few months she didn’t wait. That was a bit creepy. I was having trouble reading this at first because of that  But I continued and was so glad I did.
My favorite characters would be both Sebastian and Caroline. Caroline for finally standing up for herself. She grew a backbone and started doing what she wanted not what others wanted her to do. Sebastian, because even though he grew up in a highly dysfunctional family he still loved. He was a gentleman.
I would recommend this book and it is for mature readers

I started writing contemporary romance two years ago. Before that, I didn’t think I could write a sex scene. Turns out I can!

My lucky number is 13 because I was born on the 13th and live near a haunted castle by the ocean. My number one past-time is watching hot surfers get changed into (and out of) their wetsuits.

My husband doesn’t read my books. My mother does.

Writing is my love, my hobby, my total addiction. All my characters are important to me and whisper their stories, even when I’ve finished writing their books. That’s why you’ll often find bonus chapters/out-takes from various books, because those voices just won’t be quiet.

Excerpt

He bit back a curse and strode to his truck. Unlocking the door, he tossed his bags in the backseat, climbed in, and slammed the door. He turned the key and backed out resolutely, trying to ignore the fact that she had risen, her hands on her bags, and that her hood had slipped from her head. She didn’t move forward, didn’t call out to him to wait. She just stood there, watching him go. He shifted into drive and made it 100 feet before he let his eyes find her figure in the rear view mirror.

“Unbelievable,” Finn ground out, and slammed the wheel with the palm of his hand. He slowed to a stop. “UNBELIEVABLE!” he reprimanded himself even as he engaged the brake, pushed the door open and lurched out of the idling vehicle. Bonnie still stood with her two duffle bags in her hands, her grandma’s stolen purse on her shoulder, but now her lips were slightly parted, clearly stunned that he’d stopped.

And she wasn’t the only one. Finn felt like he was split right down the middle. The rational part of his brain, the side that ensured his survival and his sanity, was outraged, demanding that he keep driving, while the side of his brain that was connected to his heart and other parts of his body was breathing a sigh of relief that he hadn’t let her get away.

She didn’t move, as if she was sure that the moment she did he would change his mind, climb back in the Blazer, and drive away. So he walked back to her, battling with himself every step of the way. He walked until they were practically toe to toe, her dark eyes wide and lifted to his, his hands shoved into his pockets so he wouldn’t strangle her. But his pockets felt like manacles around his wrists and he yanked them free, fisting them in the front of Bonnie’s puffy pink coat and raising her up on her toes and into him until they weren’t toe to toe any longer but nose to nose. His emotions were a big tangled ball of anger, longing, and injustice all wrapped up in impatient outrage, and Finn couldn’t separate one feeling from another. So he did the only thing he could do. He kissed her.

It wasn’t a soft kiss or a sweet kiss. It was a ‘you-scared-me-and-messed-with-me-and-I’m-mad-and-relieved-and-unbelievably-frustrated’ kind of kiss. It was teeth and lips and nipping and bruising, and Finn couldn’t make himself stop, even when Bonnie’s teeth tugged at his lower lip and her hands pulled at his hair. Especially then. And when she wrapped her arms around his neck and stepped up onto his toes so that she could press herself flush against him, he decided revenge really was sweet, and enjoyed the feel of her face against his, the wet heat of her mouth making him forget he was standing in the middle of a Motel 6 parking lot with his ride rumbling behind him, the driver side door still hanging wide open. The rational part of his brain was stunned into peaceful silence…for all of ten seconds.

Synopsis

Katie’s world came crashing down in an instant.

Her husband, daughter, and unborn baby. . . all gone in a flash. The life that she’d come to know, gone before she ever really got to live it.

With a broken heart, she deals the only way she knows how, by shutting it all off. No communicating, no feelings, just pure nothingness.

Alone with nothing but her own thoughts and a well meaning family, she moves back to her childhood home, a horse farm. It’s there that she finds herself healing along with the horses her family rehabilitates. But when Parker McKenzie comes back into her life she’s reminded of all that went wrong, and all that she lost.

Meet the Author

author pic

A.E. Woodward lives in Vacationland with her husband and two young children. Between her day job and the pursuance of a master’s degree, she wrote her first novel, Imperfectly Perfect. Since then she has written three more novels, Imperfectly Real, Kismet, and Imperfectly Bad.

excerpt

In the twenty minutes that has passed since my Mom called Parker, the kitchen has become a hub of excitement and confusion. I’m still sitting on the hallway floor. In all the confusion I think I’ve been forgotten. But that’s fine, because I’m really good with being alone. It’s soothing for me to be lonely. That, and listening to all the conversation gives me something else to focus on besides myself. Tommy and Pop eventually join Mom and Stevenson in the kitchen, waiting for Parker. Each of them throw their two cents in as to how this should go down. Tommy insists that he should go with us, saying that Parker can’t handle the responsibility. I appreciate that he’s still trying to look out for my best interests, but the fact of the matter is that Tommy doesn’t know the half of what I need.

He goes round with Mom and Pop, but Stevenson stops him. “We need to follow her lead, Tommy.”

“I just don’t think her going there with him is the best option right now!” Tommy yells.

“Now, I respect your concern, Tommy, and we all appreciate that you want the best for your sister. However, if Katie wants to go alone with Parker then that is what we give her. She needs to be in control of her own recovery. We need to remember that this isn’t about us. She’s an adult, she can make her own choices.”

Tommy lets out a sarcastic laugh just before I hear the screen door fling open, the springs creaking in response, and then quickly slamming shut. “What the hell is going on?” Parker asks anxiously.

Quickly, Stevenson fills Parker in on my request. He adds that Parker shouldn’t feel pressured, especially if he’s not comfortable with the situation, but that he needs to understand how huge this could be for my treatment.

“Why me?” he questions.

“I dunno, Parker,” Tommy barks. “Why you?”

There’s a brief, awkward silence before Stevenson clears his throat and continues to speak. “Obviously Katie knows you well enough to know that you’ll be there for her, while allowing her enough independence to cope with it on her own terms. She’s trusting you,” Stevenson says without emotion.

“I don’t know if I can do this,” he mutters. Experience tells me that he’s most likely running his hands through his hair. He always does when he’s nervous.

A fist slams against the table, making me jump out of my skin. “You’re right, you can’t!”

“Tommy!” Mom scolds.

A few more moments of awkward silence pass. I can only imagine the looks that are being thrown in that kitchen. The tension is surely raising a few questions in everyone’s mind. “I just don’t think this is the best idea,” Tommy speaks quietly. “You’re in over your head, Park.”

“We’ve been here before, Tommy,” Parker reminds him.

“Exactly.”
