THE KALDALANGRA SERIES
by Kristi Strong
Rhea Aralia lived an uneventful life in Virginia, until the fateful night of her kidnapping. Taken to a strange realm of destruction, despair, and mysterious people with dark secrets, the young woman must learn a new way of life to survive.
With the help of her new companions, Rhea discovers the courage to defy the tyrant King Verikhan and his heir, the cleverness to deceive the court, and the power within herself to transform this world of darkness into one of beauty and hope.
Will Rhea triumph over those who seek her destruction, or will she be forever lost in the darkness known as Kaldalangra
Join Rhea as she fights to take destiny back into her own hands.
One night, while documenting artifacts in the school basement, 3 men just appear and take her through a magic mirror to a whole new land. She is starved and left to die on a rock. She befriends the strange creatures and survives. Shocked that she survived, she becomes the new mate for the Prince, who, it turns out is a brainwashed, Matt. His name is now Mateo. This kingdom is cruel and ruled by a cruel king and equally cruel Mateo, who does not know who Rhea is or who he used to be. Rhea is assigned a guard, Rowan, who is rude to her.
This book is for a young adult (14+) audience. I recommend the story to those who love epic tales of romance and intrigue. This is not a story heavy on the “curl your toes” type of adult only romance.
It has been two years since the reign of the tyrannical King Verikhan has ended, and the realm of Kaldalangra flourishes.
Nyssa has taken her place as Queen of the realm, with her secret love, Sebast, now openly at her side. She rules with a fair hand, striving for justice and prosperity for all of her people.
Rowan and Rhea travel the realm, spreading peace and healing wherever they go. In Kylassame, they have formed a strong bond with friends and spread deep roots in the community.
The people of Kaldalangra are joyful, and life in their world is better than ever before.
But a string of tragedies has the ability to bring Rhea to her knees, and with her, the entire realm. While Rowan struggles to recover the village of Kylassame from a devastating crime, Rhea’s faith in her own strength weakens, with dire consequences.
Re-enter the world of Kaldalangra, and join the adventure as Rhea and Rowan endeavor to continue upon their chosen destiny.
The story of Rowan and Rhea continue 2 years later. They are to be married, Nyssa is queen and married to her true love and the land is prospering. Rhea realizes she is pregnant, but before she tells Rowan, she miscarries. This event throws Rhea into a depression. She is summoned to court to help with a newcomer from Rhea’s time. Rowan cannot come at that particular time, but promises to follow in a few days. Rhea experiences quite a few sad events which, coupled with the fact that Rowan is not with her and her post miscarry depression, sends Rhea into a depressive vortex that she cannot come out of.
Most of this book was the conflict in the relationship of Rowan and Rhea. The majority of the story was spent with these 2 characters apart. I totally understood the depression spiral and Rowan’s ignorance of it. I even understood how he could be tricked by the woman, Amanda. I did not understand the constant back and forth that Rhea seemed to go through when it came to sticking by her marriage. She never seemed indecisive before, but with this huge commitment, she has trouble?

Heart of Kylassame Excerpt
The clearing was covered in a thick layer of frost, the trees, the plants and the insects. Her feet crunched over frozen blades of grass as Nyssa walked to the small fountain that had been build in honor of the fallen Mercene and knelt briefly in the thin layer of frost-created snow. Needles of cold shot through her fingers as she picked up a bouquet of roses that lay on the ground, the flowers covered in a thick layer of ice.
Lianna walked forward tentatively, eyes open wide in fear. The fountain was frozen, the water caught mid-flow as it tumbled down the carved stone. The ice was clear as glass in the summer sun, slightly melting in the hot air before freezing once again, an endless cycle of entrapment. She could see the red swirls that had rippled through the water before it froze, the tiny red droplets that gleamed on the ice-white surface of the pool. In the depths of the water, the ornamental fish swam slowly, sluggishly, their resilient bodies succumbing to the freezing temperature above.
Dmitri folded his hands within his long-sleeved brown tunic. “It began yesterday. The roses and the fountain had frozen over when Lady Rhea left the garden. When I checked the clearing this morning the frost had spread to the entire area, and is slowly overtaking the entire garden.”
His nearly blind eyes shifted from Savin to Nyssa. “The garden reflects the heart of Lady Rhea. That was apparent so many years ago when her love and hope released us from the icy prison. Now,” he gestured to the icicles hanging from the tree branches, “something has caused her heart to go cold, and thus, we follow.”
Fixing broken computers, wrangling a very spirited little toddler, and creating a world with a tyrant king, are all parts of the average day for Kristi Strong. While she has called Virginia her home for two decades, her head has rested in two countries, three states, and far too many houses to count. She was more than happy to give up her nomadic lifestyle and settle down with her husband, daughter, cat and chinchilla.
While attending James Madison University, she was given the rare opportunity to work as part of an archaeological team on a variety of dig sites in Virginia, including the homes of former Presidents, James Madison and George Washington, civil war sites such as The Stevens’ House and Fort Evans Mississippian Encampment, and a variety of pre-historic hunting sites and camps.
Kristi now uses her extensive studies in human cultures to create her own world in her fantasy novels, beginning with her debut novel, The Lady of Steinbrekka, and continuing with Heart of Kylassame and Soul of Asimina.
1.) Is writing your only profession?
Right now, no. I currently work full-time as computer support for a school, which takes up most of my time but pays the bills. I am actually a few months away from completing a career change as well, which is why my social presence has dropped off a bit in the last few months (going back to school while working full-time and having a 3 year old is the most exhausting thing I’ve done!)
2.) Who was your favorite character to write? Why?
That would have to be Sabina, the main character in Soul of Asimina (3rd in the Land of Kaldalangra series). She is so tough, confident, and poised (even though sometimes she forgets she is those things) and it is fun writing someone who is a little more sure of their place in the world. She also is very outspoken and refuses to let others tell her what to do, which is a fun to write.
3.) Who are some of your favorite authors?
I love Anne Bishop, Juliet Marillear, Sarah Douglass, Jill Cooper, Kristina Circelli, and Bethany Lopez. (yes, mostly fantasy, but I can’t put down a Bethany Lopez romance!)
4.) What is your favorite writing snack you eat or drink while writing?
Usually if I have something it would be a Blow-pop sucker or Werther’s candy. If I have anything that I have to keep in my hand, it tends to make me type slower and get more distracted.
5.) What makes you mad enough to want to throat punch a person? LOL
LOL! My biggest aggravation are people who are not willing to learn. It is fine if you don’t know how to do something, and it’s just as fine if you are bad at doing it, as long as you are willing to try. Few things get under my skin like someone going, “Well, I don’t know how to do it, so you just do it for me.”
6.) What is your favorite TV show?
The Big Bang Theory. I just discovered it last year (I know, I hide under rocks) and now I’m playing catch-up.
What is this…vacation? I would love to go somewhere that is 70-75 degrees at all time, sunny but too sunny, no humidity, and preferably with a swimming pool (that isn’t cold). I also really love Wisconsin Dells and DisneyWorld.
