Someone is making homeless cats disappear and Michelle Slade wants to put a stop to it. The office manager at Aegar Investigations and owner of cat rescue Cats Alive, she struggles to keep together the life she’s forged since the one she knew shattered five years ago on the night she was raped. She couldn’t have predicted that the rape’s impact would reach into her present life and put a strangle grip on all she holds dear, thanks to the evil machinations of powerful businessman, William Carter.
When Michelle’s problems with Carter escalate, friends rally to help her, with private investigator Casey Mitchell at the top of the line. When Casey finds his investigation takes him down a very dark path of diabolic and life-threatening research conducted by Carter Enterprises, he attempts to keep his work life and his private identity as a were-lynx separate. However, though he’s been trained his whole life to keep his identity and his colony of were-cats protected, he now struggles with terrible aloneness.
As they are thrown together to save the missing cats and remedy worse problems, Michelle and Casey can triumph and find true love, or lose everything.
Michelle dropped her gaze and rubbed her toe against a crack in the sidewalk. Talking to Casey would relieve her anxiety, she knew from experience. But it wasn’t his concern. He lifted her chin to face his gaze. “C’mon. I won’t tell Sterling and Lacey you want to play hooky.”
“They gave me the day off.” The touch of his hand made her skin warm. “I’ve got several things going on today, so they suggested I tie up ends.”
Another smile unleashed. “Oh. I thought you might spend the day with me.” He rolled his shoulders, nervously, then slanted a smile her way. “Get you more settled in at your new house. Spend some time together.” Her heart clenched. His interest in her was subtle but she felt it. It had popped up before and she’d ignored it. Ignoring was getting harder. But she just wasn’t ready for more than friendship. Not yet. “Casey, I’m sorry. I can’t.” He bunched his hair in both hands and slanted a somber gaze at her. “What are we talking about here? We’re friends, Michelle. Can’t we spend time together?” He shook his head. “I’m sorry. I know you have your reasons for needing space.”
“And so do you,” she whispered. Casey flinched, as though she’d just sucker punched him. Conflicted feelings rose in him, unsettling her insides. They stood across from each other as seconds ticked by, traffic noise filling the space between them. Then, silently, he lugged several large bags of cat food to her Jeep while she watched, mesmerized by his sleek physique as much as his ability to dampen down his emotions to a place of indifference.
Michelle is a young woman and also a rape survivor. She runs a non profit company that helps sterilize stray cats and sets other cats up for adoption. Her love interest is Casey, who is a were-lynx and leader of his pack, unbeknownst to Michelle. The story revolves around Michelle and Casey trying to figure out why cats are disappearing, why Michelle is being turned out of her home and what the resident bad guy is testing in his research lab.
When Casey goes against several lifetimes of protocol in order to reveal the existence of the were-lynx to humans, said humans were all like, “Cool, you’re so pretty in your cat form”. Very unrealistic and strange reactions, I felt. The plot was a good one, gripping in its cruelness, but the action wasn’t believable. Casey and his buddy was able to break into the compound with no problems. Casey was able to get a job with the bad guy and this smart bad guy totally believes that Casey is now a bad guy too. Really?
The romance between Casey and Michelle is cute and one of the things that works in this book. Spending more time with the were pack would’ve been fun as they all had such unique personalities. I think there may be another book to come as some issues were unresolved, especially involving Kennedy.
This book is for an adult audience due to graphic sex.
I’m giving this book 3 fangs.
