Haunting of Ingersull Penitentiary by Victoria Roder

When heiress and savvy business woman, HAILEY PRICE purchases the abandoned Ingersull Penitentiary with an inheritance from her murdered mother, and incarcerated father’s estate, she has no idea what evil lurks there. She is converting the former penitentiary, founded on a system of separation and torture, built on land cursed by a witch in the sixteen hundreds, into an inn. Unbeknownst to Hailey, the residual haunts inside the former prison are the least of the frightening occurrences at the new “Big House Inn”.
While preparing for her opening, Hailey discovers an Ouija board that sends messages on its own accord, experiences darting shadows and hears faint whispers. She decides to visit JOHN LAKOTA in the county jail. He has been charged for attempting to destroy federal property when he attempted to blow up Ingersull Penitentiary while it remained a functional prison. “Little John” Lakota tells Hailey the history of a witch burned at the stake by magistrate JONAT INGERSULL for whom the penitentiary is named. Lakota claimed he had no choice but to destroy the prison in an attempt to stop the evil from repeating itself for all eternity.
Not certain what to make of Lakota’s rants Hailey returns to the “The Big House Inn” to prepare for the grand opening. She has invited several guests to stay at the inn and tour the portion of the penitentiary preserved in its history. GUARD NOA MAUI LANI, the kitchen manager MAGGIE ROSS, and Hailey’s assistant BRAXTON TURNER are on hand to assist over the weekend.
Hailey begins to experience confusing dreams about her mother’s murder at the hands of her father. She asks her ex-husband to fax over the transcripts from the trial. Instead, in the hope of rekindling their failing relationship, NATE CHRISTOPHERSON hand delivers the transcripts and attributable to an electrical storm, the prison’s emergency override confines him and the guests to the penitentiary.
The witch’s curse that Lakota spoke of has begun to prey on the personal weakness of each inhabitant. Sins from the past materialize and stalk the guests. The Ouija board spells out warnings, residual haunts and horrors from the penitentiary’s past fade in and out. Before the weekend is over the witch manifests in the physical form of one of the occupants. Several guests meet their untimely deaths and Hailey races to gather the remaining visitors before they are damned to spend eternity trapped in Ingersull Penitentiary.
Hailey must destroy the penitentiary and cut the Ouija board into seven pieces and bury it in the ground. A supernatural force locks Lani in a suite, he convinces Hailey to proceed without him. She sets C-4 throughout the penitentiary, engages the manual override that has locked them in the prison, and after a test of faith, lead the few survivors to safety. Against protests, and explosions, Hailey and Nate reenter the complex to save Lani.
In a final showdown with the witch that has possessed Braxton’s body, Hailey must accept her role in her mother’s death to combat the ancient evil preying on sins of the past at The Big House Inn. Exploding the door to save Lani, Hailey, Nate and Lani escape the prison with the possessed Ouija Board. As the explosions begin to turn the complex to rubble, the trio is confident they have won the battle of good verses evil and sparks reignite between Hailey and Nate. That is until the crowd that has gathered panics, pushing and shoving to move farther away from the explosions. The Ouija Board which must be cut and buried in the ground to stop the curse, is knocked loose from Lani’s grip and disappears into the crowd. Hailey, Lani, and Nate are the only ones that can hear the eerie cackle of the witch.
I give it 4 fangs.
Haunting of Ingersull Penitentiary is a stand-alone book by Victoria Roder. I would suggest this book for adults only.
This story is the conversion of an old federal prison into a Bed and Bath Inn called The Big House Inn. Hailey is the owner of the Big House and has spent every last penny to change it over. She is having a special invitation only party for the weekend. Hailey keeps ignoring the odd things that are happening around her and to her employees. Her almost ex-husband tries to talk her out of the inn after having a visit of the inn. Will her denial of the “Haunting” be the end of the end and maybe the end of her?
The story does start off slow but gives you a huge surprise ending.
Without giving away any spoilers, if you like thrills, then you will like this book.
