A No Good Itch

by S.D. Skye

IN THE GAME OF ESPIONAGE, SPY TAKES TRAITOR.

J.J. MCCALL TAKES OVER.

The FBI and Italian Mafia make strange bedfellows when a vicious Russian Organized crime figure, operating at the behest of Russian Intelligence, lands in The Big Apple. The Russian intelligence hench-man, infamously known as Mashkov, avenges the death of slain a Russian sleeper agent and accidentally hits the son of an Italian crime boss, sending J.J. and Task Force Phantom Hunter to the streets of New York. They are stepping into a possible war between Russian and Italian organized crime factions, while trying to dismantle the financial hub of the most insidious Russian illegals network in U.S. History.

Meanwhile, CIA Case Officer Grayson “Six” Chance is in Moscow trying to capture a fugitive American who has stolen White House intelligence and is planning to pass it to the Russians—putting Six in a moral dilemma he may not be prepared to handle.

And when J.J. finally learns the truth surrounding her mother’s death in the line of duty, her life may never be the same.

If you enjoy this book, you will love Book 1–The Seven Year Itch (A J.J. McCall Novel) and Book 2 — Son of a Itch (A J.J. McCall Novel).

excerpt

The Sheriffs walked J.J. and Tony through a series of security doors until they reached the interrogation room. They left their overcoats with their escorts and tugged their suit jackets straight before entering. The sight of Kendell Phillips’ murderer shrouded in orange and shackled at the hands and feet gave J.J. a burst of pleasure she hadn’t felt since her early morning romp with Tony. A reddish blue bruise circled his eye and spread to the cap of his jaw. His gaze disintegrated under the weight of her glare and fell to his twiddling thumbs. She prepared to speak when an overwhelming scent jarred her senses—the smell of contemptible swine.

My, my, my,” J.J. said to Maddix. “What an ugly fall from grace. Too bad they don’t make an Armani perp suit. You used to wear him so well.”

Positioned across from Maddix, Tony scanned the rat’s face and looked at him with a pained expression. “Rough night, eh? Did they forget to put you in solitary? Looks like you’ve been mingling with the locals.”

Nothing I can’t handle,” he said with a shrug. Then he leaned back, spread his knees wide, and placed his hands in his lap. “So, this is the reason you came all the way to Shangri-La? To gloat?”

J.J. savored his misery and then vexed him with a tight smile. “We’re here to discuss your comrade in arms, Hawk—Gary Mosin.”

Newsflash, doll.” Maddix forced out a grating laugh, overplaying his weak position just a smidge. “You get nothing from me, not without a deal. I want immunity.”

Immunity?” J.J. blinked in rapid motion.

Listen, you ain’t gotta make this difficult. We didn’t come here to pick a fight. Give us the information we need, and you can go back to counting the tiles on the ceiling . . . or whatever it is you do on the inside.” Tony contrived a calm demeanor as he reached into his pant pocket and pulled out a pack of Marlboro 100s and a book of matches. He slid them to the middle of the table until they stopped beside a plastic ashtray. “Our treat. Enjoy. But if you choose to stay on the difficult route, we can reverse course any time.”

Maddix cupped his hands and with no show of gratitude, pulled the offerings to the table’s edge, his shackles jangling with his every move. He folded back the foil on the corner of the pack and knocked the open end against his wrist until a cigarette emerged. Then his brow drew together, furrowed in confusion. “You don’t have a clue, do you?” His gaze ping-ponged between J.J. and Tony before he shook his head. “That’s why you’re here. You don’t know!”

review2

I received this anthology from the authors and from Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock.   I am an independent reviewer.   This is the third J.J. McCall novel in the FBI Espionage Series and ends in a cliffhanger.  Biggest cliff ever.
>J.J. and Tony are FBI agents and lovers.  They are once again embroiled in an investigation involving the Russian mob and the Italian mafia.  Tony is a son of said mafioso, but decided at an early age to work on the side of right, causing a rift in his family.  J.J. is a total alpha female with a strange ability to actually detect lies.  Her skin begins itching if she is told lies.
>There are so many characters in his book.  I joined the series at book 3, so it took a bit until I could get all the agencies and characters straight in my mind. Thankfully, the author included a cast of characters and a listing of terms to help out.  I would suggest reading the books in order, but it isn’t impossible to read this book as a stand alone and still enjoy it.
>I wouldn’t classify this book as a romance, but more as an action thriller.  There is so much action it is hard to put down. The plot occurs in NY and overseas in Russia.  Six is a US operative in Russia on a mission that will eventually mesh with J.J.’s.  He is also J.J.’s ex.  Both Six and Tony screw up bad and need to win J.J. back.  I love the fact that J.J. really doesn’t need either of them.  For once, the female is the stronger of the characters.  The plot is so intricate, I can’t imagine the outlining for this book.
>I was only bothered by one fact that kept popping up. The fact itself didn’t bother me, but the fact it was mentioned over and over, as if it made a difference really bothered me.  What is this fact mentioned ad nauseum? The fact that J.J. is African American.  Why does this matter?  I know a point was made with Tony’s very Italian family, that he would never settle down with a black woman.  The truth is an Italian mafia family wouldn’t allow one of their sons to settle down with a non-Italian woman, never mind her skin color.  At no time was her skin color an issue.  Sure she infiltrates a mansion with an all Jamaican women’s cleaning crew, but that could still happen if the author changed the cleaning crew to all Chinese female or all Polish female.  I just thought the mention of her race so often was odd.
>This book is for an adult audience due mainly to violence and scenes of torture.  If you love action adventure stories filled with government espionage and intrigue, this book will not disappoint.
> I’m giving this book 4 fangs.

  1. Thank you for hosting!! I appreciate the review and for all who stop by, please don’t forget to enter to win the Kindle and GC! ❤

  2. I wanted to thanks again for your review and offer something of an explanation to your concerns about race. The two main characters — J.J. and Tony come from two extreme backgrounds and cultures. Their parents are from an older generation and suffer from old thinking. Her father is a former black panther and she grew up in this “black power” environment, his father is a mob boss and he grew up in a very traditional Italian environment. They both grew up where their families were proponents of sticking to your own race when it comes to love. And that happens in real life, however uncomfortable it may be to talk about. In Book 2–Tony is the “white guy” that J.J. takes home to meet her father who wants her to find and marry “a good black man.” In Book 3, J.J. has to face Tony’s sister who is less than happy she’s black. It’s a very small part of both books overall because it’s mostly about spy stuff. And the point is not to stress race rather the fact that they are part of this new generation that doesn’t care, at least in the romantic elements. So, there is balance in the way the story is told, but if you haven’t read all of the series it may seem out of balance. I sought to show that neither side is innocent of that type of thinking. That’s all I wanted to offer. Thanks for taking the time to read it and I’m glad you enjoyed it. 🙂

  3. Good and interesting review. Another great Skye story.

  4. What’s the author’s dream cast if the book were to be made into movie?

  5. Would ever go back to the FBI ? Also do you like writing better than working in the FBI ?

    • Hi SpiritofNLM. No, I think 12 years is long enough to spend at the FBI although I will forever cherish the people and my experiences. Would I do it again if I had the choice? Absolutely. To your second point, YES…I love writing more than any other vocation. My ultimate happiness would be writing stories full time. For me, that’s the sign that I’ve “made it.”

  6. I love the excerpt. Sounds like a great book

  7. Enjoyed reading this review today

  8. When and why did you decide to become an author?

  10. I can’t wait to read this book. I have added this book to my book wishlist.

  11. Thank you for the wonderful excerpt!
