Lady Overton’s Perilous Journey
by Vikki Vaught
GENRE: Historical Romantic Suspense
When her son’s life is threatened, Anissa, Marchioness of Overton, seeks refuge by sailing to America. Before the ship reaches the high seas, sparks fly between her and Captain Alex Hawks. Although the young widow may be lonely, and afraid, she cannot risk the diversion a romantic entanglement could bring, no matter how much she wants to lose herself in the captain’s embrace.
The Captain vows to protect the young Lord Overton, but can offer no assurance that the marchioness will leave his ship with her virtue intact. Alex is drawn to Anissa’s beauty and courage, as a hummingbird is to the nectar of a flower. How long can he fight a losing battle before he surrenders and makes her his own?
Will Alex be able to keep this remarkable woman and her child safe? Will his passion for Anissa be enough or will their differences keep them apart?
Lying in bed with her eyes shut tight, fighting the image of Alex’s broad, muscular chest under his clinging wet shirt, she tossed and turned for well over an hour. Looking at the clock on the mantel, she noticed it was close to eleven. Obviously, she was not going to sleep. She decided to go down to the library and find a book. Climbing out of bed, she pulled on her dressing gown, lit a candle, and left the room.
As she stepped out into the hall, she listened for any sign that Alex might still be up. Not hearing anything, she cautiously made her way to the library. The study door remained shut, but she did not see any light coming from under it, so she felt sure he must have gone up to bed. She let out her breath. The last thing she wanted was to run into him with her hair hanging down her back and in her nightclothes.
Entering the library, she walked over to the shelf that held novels and began thumbing through them, looking for one that sounded interesting. Of course, if she picked out a boring one it might help her fall asleep faster. Trying to juggle the candlestick and a book, the tome slipped out of her hands and fell to the floor, a loud bang echoed through the room.
Oh, dear, I hope I did not awaken anyone.
The book had slid under the bookcase, so she bent down on her hands and knees to retrieve it. As she reached for it, she heard a noise and looked up. A large figure stood in the shadows of the door. In a tremulous voice, she asked, “Who is there?” The figure moved forward and came into the light. “You gave me a terrible fright. I thought you were an intruder.”
“No, it’s jus’ me,” Alex replied, his speech slightly slurred. Kneeling down on the floor, he picked up the book and handed it to her. “I believe ya dropped this.” Losing his balance, he fell back on his buttocks and laughed. “I seem t’ have lost my balance.” Then reaching for Anissa, he pulled her down with him. “Give me a kiss, darlin’.”
His breath smelled of whiskey. Obviously, he had been drinking, and from his slurred speech, he seemed quite intoxicated. The candle had gone out when he pulled her to him, so she could not make out his features, but she sensed he was looking at her. Before she could respond, his lips crashed down on hers in a deep kiss. Unable to keep herself from responding, she kissed him back, as ravenous as he appeared to be. Desire ran rampant through her body.
Alex slid his hands up and down her back, pulling her closer as he deepened his kiss. She melted under his roaming hands and devastating kiss. Her common sense told her she needed to put a stop to this, but a part of her wanted him to go on kissing her forever.
As an independent reader/reviewer for PRATR, I give this book 5 fangs, loved it! The story is in third person but switches between a few character’s POV. What can I say about Lady Overton? Simply put, I liked her. Anissa is strong willed and at the same time she had a vulnerable quality. She felt real. I loved Alex too. He was a pompous, as Anissa would say, strumpet at the beginning, but as he opened himself up to Anissa his true caring nature became apparent. Because of the time period, it took me a couple chapters to get into the story. When I first began this book I thought the dated words were confusing and the situations felt too proper and cheesy. I’ll admit I did roll my eyes a couple of times. But as I continued with the story all that properness and cheesy moments were the types of things that were authentic to the 1800’s. People acted and spoke differently back then. I believe the author did an excellent job with her use of dialect and details that remained true to that time period. Also, I have to say the editing was well done too. The plot was slow paced, but I still found the story captivating, love being the main factor to that and oh yeah, the steamy moments in the bedroom. I’d recommend this book for 18+ due to sexual content.
