The Sciell: Book 1 of The Merging Worlds Series
by Auden Johnson
GENRE: dark fantasy
Darkness is alive. It has power.
Shade, a half-breed, and her adopted brother and protector, Vayle, are discovering the dark lies behind their village. Their home is in each other. Family runs deeper than blood. Shade tries to find herself beyond the bullied half-human. Vayle’s only job was to be his baby sister’s shield. He trained her too well. She doesn’t need his protection. They’re lost. Maybe Raesul’s destruction will show them their true selves, their true purpose. The prison walls are coming down. Darkness is changing. The world will suffer.
Her Lifeblood shot out of her hands, wrapping Darkness around it to create swords. She had taught her power to draw her curved blades when her instincts screamed danger. Bleak gripped the swords and moved forward. She wrapped two shields around herself—one to hide her scent, the other to make her body blend in with the background.
She commanded the Lifeblood to lighten her body so her footsteps wouldn’t give away her position.
The smart move would’ve been to leave or find another route. The hallway was wide enough for two bodies to walk comfortably side by side. If she needed to turn in a hurry, she could. The passageway emptied to a large chamber several paces in each direction. Other than that, she didn’t sense any other way out. If the beasts setting off her inner alarm surrounded her now, she’d be trapped.
She still moved forward. The only beings in Raesul powerful enough to defeat her were her Del’Praeli.
Besides the usual smells, her senses didn’t pick up anything outside the meat. Bleak raised her blades and stopped. Her skin tingled. Her senses screamed. She was surrounded.
Eight shadows became black masses around her. Fresh blood rolled through their skin of Darkness. The pests smelled liked they had cooked themselves in a soup of dead humans.
Shade is and unusual character she is constantly put down and expects to be treated with nothing but hate. She has to tolerate constant pain yet even though she seems weak there is strength to her and during this installment it only grows. She develops into a leader and emerges as a stronger character. Vayle is equally complex he is stronger and respected even though he is friends with a half breed. His weakness is Shade he wants her to be stronger yet he doesn’t see the person she has become.
There is a huge amount of violence throughout the book and some uncomfortable scenes for some. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes a darker plot. It’s an interesting plot that moves at a steady pace and I’m sure as the series progresses it will only get better.
