GENRE: Contemporary Romance
Ginny Cotton, bike riding, chess playing, loan processor, has set a new goal: find someone to have sex with. Soon. As in tonight. It’s the only way to finally get over Jason, her best friend, the guy she’s been waiting for since high school— the guy who is now engaged to her sister. She’s saved her virginity for him since he doesn’t believe in premarital sex. What better way to get over Jason than to have sex with someone else? The hot guy Ginny meets through a dating site seems like the perfect choice. There’s only one problem. To achieve her goal, Ginny must first overcome the anxiety that has been holding her back her whole life.
“You’re supposed to eat the salad first,” Ginny said.
“My dad always said I was the backward twin.” Pierce took a bite of salad. “This dressing tastes like glue.”
“How do you know what glue tastes like?”
“I don’t actually remember tasting glue, but according to my mom I put everything in my mouth, and since I’m positive this is what glue tastes like I must have tried it once.”
“If you don’t like it, you don’t have to eat it.”
“I didn’t say I don’t like it.” He took another bite.
“So you’re saying you like the taste of glue?”
“No, I’m saying that since you made it for me, I’m going to eat it. I’m being polite.”
“By saying my food tastes like glue?”
“Your food tastes fine, it’s the dressing that tastes like glue.”
Ginny pushed her empty salad bowl to one side, hungrier now than when she’d started it. For the first time, she noticed the unpleasant aftertaste left by the dressing. She took a slice of pizza and bit into it, closing her eyes as the greasy deliciousness hit her tongue. She opened her eyes to find Pierce watching her.
“Good?” he asked.
When they were done eating, Pierce took a deck of cards out of his jacket pocket. “I thought we’d play cards first.”
“Or we could play chess.”
“I don’t play chess.”
“I don’t think I can date a guy who doesn’t play chess.” Ginny smiled, though she was only half kidding.
“We’re not dating. There’s too much pressure in dating. We’re going to play cards and later we’ll play the other game.”
Thinking about the mysterious other game brought heat to Ginny’s face, along with other places.
“Do you play poker?” Pierce asked.
“I played it with my cousins a few times when I was a kid, but I don’t remember all the rules.”
“I’ll teach you.”
They played a few hands. Ginny learned that a full house beats three of a kind, but nothing beats a royal flush.
Ginny Cotton is a sensible woman who thinks about and plans everything whether its work, games or her personal life. She has been saving herself sure that one day her best friend Jason will realize that she is the lady of his dreams. The only problem is Jason is marrying her sister. Ginny joins a dating site to find some that will make her forget about Jason.
Pierce is not looking for a date but his brother has set him up. When he meets Ginny he likes her a lot even if she has a panic attack when she is with him. Pierce isn’t sure about Ginny’s plan but goes along with it to spend more time with her.
Will these two find love with each other or will Pierce’s brother and Jason’s secret ruin it before they even start?
I liked Ginny she was defiantly quirky and complex which gave her realism. Pierce is a sweet character that managed to help Ginny overcome her anxiety. They are an ideal couple combining strength and vulnerability. I was frustrated with Pierce for allowing the bet to carry on but it wasn’t supposed to hurt. I always think that a writer does a great job when I dislike the nastier characters and Ms. Palmer achieved that. Steel and Bryn annoyed me they seem to play with others without think about any harm they might cause.
Overall this is a good read with a sweet romance developing against the odds. I would happily recommend this book and with a HEA what more could you want.
