Puck Dupree moved in with her sister after spending over a year trapped in the form of a fox. She had hoped to move on with a normal teenage life; however, trouble seems to have followed her.
The Council wants her to partner with a mage or forfeit her life, a friend of hers has a stalker who may or may not be trying to destroy her, and a boy at school keeps watching her. If only she could decide if he wants to kiss her or kill her.
Puck’s Choice is the first book in the Shifters & Mages series and even thought it doesn’t truly end it a cliffhanger, it leaves a hint of promise of a sequel that I, as well as many other readers, are eagerly waiting for. We are used to read about shifters that control their shift perfectly or that have slight troubles with it, but our girl Puck is in a whole other level. She is a fox shifter that spent a very long while on her animal form. One can’t help but feel sorry for the poor girl as she is kicked out of her parent’s house, have that problem with her shift and goes through hell and back trying to be a part of civilization once she regains her human form. Honestly, it was very amusing reading about Puck’s animalistic reactions in school and she tried to appear normal. To be fair, being a teen is never easy but being a shifter and having a Council, which seems to hate you for some reason, on your back reminding you as much as they possibly can that you need to have a mage-partner, someone who you swear to protect, isn’t making life any easier for her.
Nevertheless, there is no way our author would leave the poor girl to deal with all that on her own. Of course she will make wonderful friends and realize that there might be more shifter around her than she thought. There is so much I want to say about this friends and love interest of our dear Puck but I am afraid I would give everything away. Nevertheless, there is no harm in saying you will fall in love with Rand, the potential love interest. In my opinion, he was the whole package: handsome, charming, sweet, caring, everything! On the other hand, the Council is quite a mysterious entity that seem to be hiding something. Their contradictory actions towards Puck are awkward indeed and to some point I started to dislike them and how domineering they tried to be. Sure, you are a level above the shifters but you should kindly guide them through the right path instead of pushing them into an unknown direction that would probably result in defiance. Now, when it comes to the plot, I must warn you that this story is a hell of a ride. In other words, be prepared for everything because there when some twists that I didn’t expect when I thought I had the story all figured out.
If your love a mixture of paranormal, comedy, a hint of romance and a spark of mystery I assure you Puck’s Choice is for you.
