What do you do when life hands you lemons?

You grab a bottle of vodka and make one hell of a martini.

I’d been through the fire and come out a diamond. I was the owner of my destiny. Yeah that worked for about a minute. Right up until the day Nathan Alexander sent his stupid letter to my office. Then it was like someone had opened up a bag of marbles in a mine field. The life I had worked so hard to rebuild quickly started falling to pieces. Everything that meant anything to me was being snatched from my hands. Bit by bit the storm came raging. All the weakness from my past came creeping back. And any glimpse of hope I had for my future, for my son’s future, was blowing away with the wind.

That’s when I decided to go to him for help. United States Senator, Nick Knight. He is completely unexpected. His mere presence commands attention. He is everything I never thought I’d have. Everything I never knew I even wanted. He calms my storm. He quiets my soul. Even without knowing my secrets, he comforts me. But he has secrets too. Demons he drinks away at night. Maybe we can save each other.

Suddenly I’m tired of planning. Tired of running. Ready to feel.

Then reality slaps me in the face. Hard. And I am reminded that feelings have consequences…

A Woman’s Touch Excerpt © Delaney Foster 2015

Nick has a way of convincing me, without words, to do whatever he wants without me ever knowing he dominated the situation. He’s such a natural politician. The kitchen incident actually worked to my benefit. It gave me a minute to regroup. This whole thing was going way too fast. I had no intention of spending the night with Nick. Sure, the sex was amazing. Okay I take that back, I’ve had sex. What we had…was not sex. Someone needs to invent another word for it. What I had with Nick was an incredibly intense and almost surreal experience. He took my body to levels of pleasure it has never been before. It’s like we were dipping into some crazy feeling people aren’t meant to feel. You know, like how we only use a certain percent of our brains because it would make us crazy if we used the whole thing. It’s like that. But with the senses. He’s messing with me. From the inside out. I’m having a hard time separating the physical from the emotional. And I can’t fall into that trap again.

My mind was made up. I was going home to regain my sanity before seeing him tomorrow night. And in he comes, with his smooth voice and silver tongue. So here we are, having dinner at some expensive restaurant on the river. He’s just sipping his whiskey while he watches me eat. If I weren’t so freaking hungry I may be a little uncomfortable with it but I’ll save that drama for later. I’m starving. That stare though. God it’s like he’s sending Jedi mind sex from his head to mine. He’s just sitting there, all crooked smile and seductive eyes, swishing the gold liquid around in his glass of ice before taking in a mouthful. I have to put down the fork and admire him for a moment. The Veal Michael is good but nothing is more satisfying than that look. “What?” I ask.

He takes another sip. “Just thinking.”

I slide my plate to the side so it’s not a distraction. “Oh? About what?” I make an attempt at imitating his sexy sip.

Nick sets his glass on the table, never moving his eyes from mine. “I don’t want to go home alone,” he states plainly.

Here we go. The moment of truth. If I tell him no, I risk upsetting him and give up another earth shattering round of sextasy. If I say yes, I risk falling for him. As if I haven’t already done that. But at least I set up boundaries and stay in control. I take another sip. The red wine is tart and dry. Not what I’m used to. So it’s not helping much. I set the glass down and try not to be serious with my reply.

“With that smile, I doubt you go home alone often,” I tease.

He brings his elbow up to the table and rubs the stubble trail from his jaw line to his chin. He’s choosing his words. Maybe I shouldn’t have made a joke of it. “Let me say it another way then…I want you to come home with me.”

Does he even know what he’s asking? He may have random sleepovers all the time, but I try not to make it part of my routine. Sleeping with someone, in the literal sense, is a significant symbol of comfort and trust. You’re entirely vulnerable when you sleep. And then there’s the whole holding each other close…for hours..thing. Not to mention the drool. And you don’t have the intermission period to collect your thoughts and remind yourself that this is temporary, a means to an end. It’s incredibly intimate. He may not think much of it. But I do. He must sense my hesitation because he continues before I am able to object.

“I’m not asking for a kidney Heidi. I just want more time with you. Is that such a bad thing?” I guess not.

“No.”

He smiles again. “I’m not ready to let you go yet. I don’t know if I ever will be.”

Book Description:

The sun’s light dimmed many centuries before; now in the year of 2,341 rampant vampires now stalk their victims in a half-lit world. Humanity has been overtaken by a new society: one comprised of vampires, the supernatural beings that hunt them, and the remaining humans they fight over. The laws and rules that once bound our world have long since been lost. Now, the Hunter Guild struggle to stay one step ahead of the Vampire Council.

Esmore, Token Huntress, has exceeded all expectations at only 18 years of age. She is fearless leader to her team, and she is relentless in her pursuit of the enemy. There is only one problem: Esmore is struggling to repress the growing darkness that seduces her from within. Esmore takes another step into the darkness when she encounters a teasing, tantalizing — utterly unignorable — vampire.

The lines between right and wrong are blurred further as Esmore gives into her temptation, and her reality becomes deliciously tainted both with evil and with lust.

Excerpt:

Even when I conjured all my strength, his speed was unmatched. He grabbed my sword with his hands, blood spurting everywhere, his eyes now savage on me. In one swift movement he threw it away, grabbing my throat, ready to rip out my heart. His fangs were very large and blood dripped over them. Had he bitten into one of his own comrades? I could not breathe, but I did not gasp for air. I would not fall so far as to want mercy from his kind.

Before he plunged his fingers into me a hand stopped him. My heart pounded, yet I was not scared to face death. A swift movement was made and I fell to the floor, holding my throat. Whoever had grabbed his hand tore him away from me. I looked up in front of me to see the familiar coat. It was Chase. His back was to me as he faced the vampire who had almost killed me. Did the Council really have such old and strong vampires right under our noses?

“Don’t touch her. She’s mine,” Chase snarled, holding two swords.

“She threatened Whitney!” the other vampire spluttered.

“Tythian.” The small voice of the woman from behind him broke the tension. “It’s okay, we can go now.”

He buckled to his knees in front of her, cupping her face gently. “I’m sorry,” he whispered to her. “I did not know they would use you for this.” She gently caressed his face. In amidst the ghastly noises of weapons scraping against one another, it seemed to them that nothing else mattered as they gazed into one another’s eyes devotedly.

“Let’s go home,” she said with a reassuring smile. I was mortified how comfortable she was in the blood war that raged around her.

Before I could stand, the vampire had grabbed her chair and, with lightning speed, they were gone.

Chase turned to me, his fangs not as large as Tythian’s, but I could see he too was a very old vampire. “Esmore,” he whispered. Before I could run for my sword to use it against him, he had already vanished, leaving me by myself.

Kora and Kasey were the reason why he fled. They had advanced on him, trying to entrap him. For what reason he hadn’t tried to kill them I wasn’t sure. He simply hid amongst the dark. I could still feel his presence close by, but it felt as if he were only watching. Not fighting, but just watching how everything would play out. Realizing Chase was gone, they focused on another three vampires, entrapping them as Dillian and Tori covered their backs. One by one, the girls trapped more. There were so many of them.

Teary was fighting off four. Except for Tythian and Chase, they all seemed like younger vampires. You could tell by their strength and speed. Usually we could challenge vampires if they were no more than one hundred and fifty years old. After that it became very difficoven to compete against a vampire who had lived for so long.

James was now by my side. He had gathered my Barnett bow and sword for me. I used my arrows instantly on a vampire who ran for me, piercing his chest. He crumbled to the ground, quickly decaying. I roared in anger at how easily I had been overcome by the previous two vampires. I sliced through another vampire, cutting down his throat and through his belly. I cut across another’s head, slitting their throat and puncturing their chest. I raged again, feeling myself fill with hatred and a need to see their blood. I cut off one’s arm, plunging my sword into its chest, driving so deep into it that after a few steps I had nailed it to a tree. It slumped around my sword, its skin turning a shade of black. I pulled it out, watching it begin to decay.

A huge fire lit behind me. Teary was controlling the flames, sweeping over the ten of them that encircled her. There must have been one hundred vampires. This was a well-thought out ambush. James grabbed one vampire’s throat and then another as it ran from behind him. Smashing both their heads together, they shattered from the impact. James steely skin was impenetrable. He grabbed his sword from the ground. A vampire must have knocked it out of his hand. He punctured both in the chest before they could heal.

In the distance I could feel the presence of many more coming. For that many we would have to use the grenade. It was us against many. As if knowing what I was thinking, James ran to Teary as she continued to sweep her hand containing the fire around.

In the distance a vampire stalked toward Teary. He too was strong and old. I had the feeling that others followed him as their numbers grew. James now had the grenade, and he was pulling the pin. Inwardly I counted the short seconds in my head. Ten, nine. Teary continued to control her flames, still engulfing the many around her. Eight, seven. Two vampires came at me and quickly I thrust my sword into them, before shooting an arrow into another oncoming vampire. Six, five. James threw the grenade at the large army that stampeded toward us.

The leading vampire swept one hand across them both. Teary’s flames were instantly put out as a gust of wind extinguished it. The wind not only pushed James and Teary back but Dillian, Tori, Kasey, and Kora as it smashed into their backs, throwing them forward. It had even taken the Council vampires along with it. This vampire had the gift of control over wind. The grenade was thrown toward my team.

Four, three.

With all the speed I could muster I ran for them, grabbing a hold of the grenade in the air. I ran into the distance so the grenade was nowhere near them, throwing it at the army that charged toward them.

Two, One.

The grenade exploded near the army, but shattered much more than just that. Quickly a burst of dust swept over me. The burning flames of the explosion encased my body. I heard my name whispered by an angelic voice, but noted it was probably the afterlife calling for me. This must now be my time of death.

 review

This is my first read by the author – I will start by stating I had a hard time getting into this book, mostly because I floundered a bit not knowing what happened in the first book of the series. I am glad that I pushed myself and when I finally got over the lost feeling the book is stunning! The book is full of mystery, humor, happiness and sadness. Add in hot vampires and it runs the full gamut.

This is the continuation of Esmore’s story – this time she starts out as the Token Huntress (the head of a group of hunters that are hunting vampires). Her world is full of confusion and she doesn’t feel that she is where she belongs anymore. Enter her familiar – Chase – oops he is a vampire, and so it seems is Esmore.

Ms. Carrington-Russell’s writing is vivid, emotional and leaves you dreaming of her character’s and the plot lines twist and turn with ease and keep you turning pages. Her descriptive writing makes the future seem dark and sad at times – then hopeful and laughing. A great mixture of love, laughter and angst the next page.

If you are in the market for a stellar PNR – this one is definitely worth the time – I do suggest that you read the books in order so you are more invested in the first page then I was. I look forward to seeing what happens next. Well done.

Shrum’s writing is smart, imaginative, and insanely addictive! I have begun to think of her books as my Kory Krack. I beg of you to pick them up. You will NOT regret it! ~ Darynda Jones, New York Times Bestselling Author of the Charley Davidson series

This book and author are now among my favorites! Wow! I might be a little partial to this story because I love morbid comedy, urban fantasy, and a good mystery. I’m also a big fan of original ideas, since they’re so rare anymore. But this one has it all! ~ Angela Roquet, author of the Lana Harvey Reapers Inc. series

Shrum is a master at blending a breezy narrative with genuine weight to story and characters. Hysterical, moving, and fascinating all at once. ~ John K. Addis, author of The Eaton

Excerpt:

“So what’ll it be?” I ask her. “Water? Juice? I don’t think we actually have Gatorade, but I can walk down to the store.”

“Water’s fine.” Ally falls back against cushions and grins up at me. A light pink blush spreads over her cheeks. She finger-combs her hair. “My hair is so pretty. I love my hair.”

I snort. “I love your hair too.”

“What else about me is cute?” she asks.

“Everything.” I fluff the pillow for her and search the room for a blanket. I yank a red velvety throw off the back of a chair as Gideon slips out of the bedroom and passes me on his way to the mini fridge. He grabs one of the wrapped water glasses from the bar above.

“Grab us one too.” I have zero problems assigning tasks to other people. Sometimes I wonder if it was a mistake going into death-replacing. Sure, I was a great death replacement agent, and dying for other people is cool, but I’m really good at bossing people around.

It’s like a calling.

Gideon fills two water glasses with some fancy bottled water from the fridge and hands me a glass. I don’t dare remind him that Ally vowed not to drink this water yesterday. She ranted about the effect of plastic on the environment for ten whole minutes. I could’ve reminded her that the planet is about to explode anyway, but that meant Gideon would’ve won the argument and I’m Team Ally all the way.

I put the glass of water in her hand. What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her. “Here you go. Drink up.”

She waves her water around. “I just feel so good, you know?”

I smile. “I can tell.”

She runs a hand through her hair. “It’s a new year. A new beginning. And we have a great plan for kicking Caldwell’s butt.”

“We do.”

“And you’re so cute and you kissed me.”

With arched eyebrows, Gideon closes the bedroom door behind him. Thankfully, the sound of the television comes on, affording us some privacy.

I sink down onto the sofa beside her. “I’ll do it again if you want me too. I’ll kiss you a million times.”

She bites her lip and I’m about to lose it. I lean forward to kiss her but she starts talking again, so I hang there mid-smooch, lips puckered.

“Life is so good right now. No one is stabbing us, burying us alive, beating us up, or kidnapping the dog,” she goes on, her voice echoing inside her water glass. Her face pinches. “That means we are probably about to die.”

I press my lips together and sigh. “Don’t say that. You’ll jinx us.”

It’s difficult getting her to sit up, but I manage it. I want her to drink this water. I tilt the glass toward her lips, encouraging her.

“This is good,” she says and frowns at the water. “Is this tap water?”

“Yep.”

“Because I’m not drinking that $15 water Gideon bought.”

“It’s tap,” I say again. “You’re just too drunk to taste it.”

Ally shrugs and finishes the glass. Then she hands me her empty glass.

“You want more?”

“No,” she grins. “I want something else.”

“We’ve got chips, but that’s about it. And Rachel can’t close a bag to save her life, so they’re probably stale.”

She shakes her head, grinning.

Then I realize what she’s saying.

“Oh.” I smile. “Okay.”

She crawls over the pillow between us and pulls herself into my lap. She straddles me, wrapping her arms around my neck. She kisses me once on the cheek, probably a missed target rather than a sweet gesture, and then manages to get my mouth the second time.

She pulls back. “God, is it you or is it really hot in here?”

“We’re still wearing our coats.”

She laughs and looks down at herself. “Oh. Right.”

I reach up behind her and pull her jacket off. “Better?”

She snuggles up to me. “You’re still hot.”

“Thanks for noticing.”

“Let me help you take your coat off.”

“Okay.” I let her attempt to pull off the jacket, but it’s not really going anywhere and she accidentally pulls my hair twice. So I help her get my jacket off and throw it over the arm of the sofa. One of the throw pillows falls to the floor with a poof.

Ally doesn’t stop there. She slips her hands under my shirt, giving me a curious look. “Is this okay?”

I try to find the voice to tell her it’s more than okay. She would have been naked an hour ago in the grubby bathroom of some bar if she wasn’t such a germaphobe.

She is so beautiful. Her eyes are bright, reflecting the lamplight. Her face is flushed from the alcohol, her smile lazy. Her eyes half-closed. My heart pounds in my chest, thudding against my ribs so hard it hurts.

“What’s wrong?” A frown creases her face and I think she can hear my heart throbbing. “Don’t you think I’m pretty?”

“Don’t be stupid.”

I reach up and pull her down into my arms. I kiss her, even more deeply than I did on the balcony. I slip my hand under her shirt and unsnap her bra with one twist of my fingers.

She gasps in my mouth and the sound of it makes my whole body shudder.

“Lay down,” I command.

She laughs, surprised, but her voice goes all deep and breathy. “Yes, sir.”

I climb on top of her, positioning myself between her legs. I kiss her neck and she squirms, bucking her hips up against mine.

“Do you love me?” she asks.

“More than anyone.”

“Are you sure?”

I cover her mouth with mine. “Please stop talking.” I pull back. “Unless you want me to stop.”

“No, no.” She grabs the front of my hoodie, twisting it up in her fists and pulls me down on top of her.

I was given this in exchange for review and two very important things that I would like you to take in mind before judging my review: 1)I didn’t know the genre 2) I didn’t know it was a part of a series. That said…
Holy smokes. I’m definitely going to go back and pick the previous books up as well as continue along with Jesse Sullivan until her quest is over. I don’t think that it hurt me not to have read the previous installments too bad, the author did an excellent job weaving just enough information in for folks like me but not took much to keep those of you who have been starting from book one from getting bored. After all, this was NOT a book you could get bored with. Jesse and her gang are still out trying to save the world with their superpowers from the evil Timothy Caldwell. They finally were able to rescue her sister Maisie back. It’s harder for them to trace Caldwell though, he’s stolen other part is powers and is teleporting now. Jesse has so much riding on her shoulders and one wrong move and the world could end, no pressure, right?

About the Author:

Kory M. Shrum lives in Michigan with her partner Kim and her ferocious guard pug Josephine. She is very fond of naps and foods made of sugar, which is, as you can imagine, a deadly combination. But she tries to compensate for her extreme physical laziness with her overactive imagination. She’s an active member of SFWA, HWA, and the Four Horsemen of the Bookocalypse, where she’s known as Conquest. She’s the author of five contemporary (and somewhat dark) fantasy novels in the Dying for a Living series: Dying for a Living, Dying by the Hour, Dying for Her: A Companion Novel, Dying Light, and Worth Dying For.

Dying for a Living has over 190 5-star reviews and is a free ebook.

When not writing, she can be found teaching, traveling, and wearing a gi. She’s very likely to tempt you to an ominous tarot or palm reading–anything spooky-foo to pass the time until Guardians of the Galaxy or Sherlock return. She’s not-so-secretly dying for the next season to begin.

Rafe Palazzo takes what he wants with no regrets. Arianna (Ari) Lynn Harlow has led a charmed life until tragedy strikes her family. He’s looking for a no-emotions attached mistress, she’s looking for redemption.

They are not a pair that should ever work, but undeniable attraction and devastating tragedies bring them together in the city by the bay where he fights to keep their relationship nothing more than an enjoyable way to meet his needs, and she battles to not lose herself in him. Spending time with Ari starts cracking the hard shell that Rafe has built around his heart, but he denies the affect she has on him until it’s too late to stop the inevitable conclusion that their relationship is headed for.

Rafe once believed in happily ever after, coming from a large Italian family. He’s got the Midas touch, since every endeavor he tries turns to gold. That all ends when his wife walks out the door and leaves him blindsided. His devastation quickly turns to steel when he decides no woman will fool him again. From that point on he treats relationships as nothing more than business transactions where both party’s come out mutually benefited.

Just when Ari has sunk to the lowest she’s ever been she finds an ad in the paper announcing a job that’s too good to be true. It turns out she’s right. She makes it through the intense rounds of interviews only to find out the job is for a mistress to the powerful Rafe Palazzo, owner of Palazzo Enterprises. Rafe gives her a day to think about whether she wants the position or not, and she’s sent on her way, only to find out her mother’s near-terminal position has taken a turn for the worse. Submit:
Arianna Harlow has a choice. Does she choose love or self-respect? Will she give up her freedom and become nothing but a shadow of herself?
This is the exciting sequel to the NYT’s and USA Today best-selling book Surrender. In Submit, Ari faces an impossible ultimatum. She needs to decide whether to accept Raffaelo Palazzo’s indecent proposal and stay at his side as his bought mistress, under his complete control in his world and in his bedroom. Rafe holds the keys to her mother’s happiness, and Ari must choose love for her mother or respect for herself and for the morals her mother instilled in her. You’ll find out that decision in this book and discover the unexpected repercussions of what Ari does choose.
Who will submit? Will it be the women or the men?
Seduced:
At the end of Submit, Arianna Harlow had enough pride in herself to walk away from Rafe Palazzo, who had started their relationship using blackmail. Though she’d fallen in love with him, she was strong enough to say goodbye. We saw the softer side of Rafe, especially toward the end, but it was too late…
Or was it?
Seduced begins almost two years after Ari starts her new life. She is teaching at a community college, and when she asks the class whether they have any questions for her, Rafe is there and has only one: Will you go on a date with me?
What is Ari’s answer? You’ll find out in the third installment of Melody Anne’s New York Times best-selling series, Surrender.
This story continues the lives of Ari, Lia and Rachel. These three women are resilient, determined, and worth loving. The question is, whether the men in their lives strong enough to keep them.
Scorched:
Has Rachel been taken against her will by the powerful King Adriano, known to her as Ian? You will find out in the beginning of a story filled with romance, lust, conflict and heat.
The king recently ascended the throne of Corythia, and his brother, Gianni, is out for revenge, for what he feels is rightfully his, a kingdom he once renounced. Meanwhile, Rachel is pregnant and determined not to fall for the handsome king’s plot to get her to the altar.
Will Rafe and Ari finally become man and wife? Rafe proposed to Ari in Seduced, and she gave him an emphatic yes, but their wedding was cancelled when Rachel went missing. Will fate succeed in its desperate attempt to keep the couple apart?

Dressed, I headed across to Enzo’s room. He opened the door for me and my mouth dropped open. He looked amazing in a white dress shirt and navy slacks. I’d never seen him in anything other than jeans, chambray or t-shirts. Instead of boots, he wore brown leather brogues.

He stared at me with an odd expression before saying, “You look good,” and turning away.

“Wow,” Gianna said, looking me over. “You scrub up well for a ranch hand.”

She wore a lovely emerald silk dress that was cut off across one shoulder and draped in an asymmetrical style beyond her knees. Strappy diamante sandals and her hair styled in a loose chignon completed the classy outfit.

“He sure does,” Enzo added, still giving me that look that made my heart thud faster.

“And there I was worried you wouldn’t have anything suitable to wear.” She beamed a smile at me, and then turned to her brother, holding up a maroon silk tie. “Come on, Enzo. The tie will go great with your suit. Tell him for me please, Alex.”

“No, I don’t need one. Alex isn’t wearing one and he looks great.” He turned away as if he hadn’t expected the words to come out as awestruck as they did.

My smile blossomed into a full grin. He really liked me in a suit then.

“I don’t need a tie. As you say I’m just the ranch hand.” I winked at Gianna. “But the tie will work well with your suit. Here let me help you.”

I walked over to Gianna and took the tie from her. “You look totally amazing,” I said and pressed a kiss to her cheek.

Then I strode over to where Enzo leaned against the table. “Trust me, you’ll look great.”

“Hmmm,” was all he said, but he let me come close enough to turn the collar of his shirt up.

I was conscious of Gianna behind us so I maintained a reasonable gap between us as I slid the silk around his neck. Each breath I took filled my lungs with his scent—man and spice—that transported me back to the night in the log cabin.

As I looped and knotted the tie, I couldn’t help brushing my fingers against his chin. His breath hitched. A smile played at the corner of my mouth. He’d shaved the skin smooth. I missed the bristles and wanted them rubbing against my skin.

“I can’t find my perfume in my purse,” Gianna called out from behind. “I’m going to pop back to my room and get it.”

My body trembled, knowing I’d be alone with Enzo for a few minutes. I could feel the tension coming off his body too.

As soon as the door closed behind his sister, I couldn’t keep away any longer. I leaned my body against his, making sure he felt the bulge of my erection on his thigh.

“I’ve missed you,” I whispered before brushing my lips on his.

He gripped my low pony tail, angled my head and devoured my mouth.

I groaned long and deep as I sank into him, loving his strength, loving the contact. My hands slid around his back as I gathered him into me so that we were as physically close as we could be with clothes on.

I don’t know what happens to me whenever this man touched me, but I felt as if this was where I should be.

A rattling noise at the door broke us apart when Enzo shoved me away.

River Road

by Eric Wilder

Genre: Cajun Mystery Thriller

Synopsis:
River Road is Book 5 in Eric Wilder’s popular French Quarter Mystery series. In River Road, a new client hires P.I. Wyatt Thomas to find the person who murdered his mother. The problem is the case isn’t just cold it’s frozen solid.

Events happen quickly when Wyatt agrees to find the person who murdered his client’s mother. Unknown assailants kill the man. When Wyatt attempts to intervene, he is shot. He awakens in a New Orleans’ hospital only to find the killers have yet to finish with him.

The mysterious men want him dead. He escapes and learns they’ve somehow managed to pin his client’s murder on him. But why? Determined to find out, he enlists the aid of Lucy Diamond, a beautiful though cynical reporter in town to film a story on the same murder his client paid him to solve. He marks her for death when they discuss the case.

The ensuing chase drags them through the gritty backside of New Orleans where everyone has a dark secret and a bloody motive. What’s the connection between the N.O.P.D., Krewe of Rex, and the southern mafia? How are the Russian Special Forces, C.I.A., and U.S. Public Health Service involved? Why is the Cuban army trying to kill them? And, what’s up with the mysterious and secret satanic sect that practices human sacrifice? Wyatt and Lucy must find out or die trying.

Here is what some readers have said about the French Quarter Mystery Series: You will hear a rocking zydeco band and smell gumbo cooking on most every page. Wilder captures the quirky, weird vibe that is New Orleans. Wilder makes you want to have a Dixie beer with his characters. Wilder’s fiction is like a cold, hurricane slush on a hot Louisiana day.

4.5 suspenseful hearts..

Who wouldn’t think there was mystery and intrigue in the Big Easy? Wyatt Thomas, cop turned private eye, meets a client at a rather unusual place. A funeral, but even for the Big Easy, this funeral is strange. Jeribeth Briggs, the deceased, is not in a coffin but set up on display like the socialite that she was as though she was waiting for a dance. Wyatt’s client comes up behind him with his retainer and the only piece of evidence that he has with the one request, “Find my mother’s killer. And don’t turn around until I’m gone.”. Wyatt takes one look into the envelope and turns to follow Timothy Taggert, he needs more answers before he can start to investigate. Once out on the side walk, he sees Timothy man-handled into a car and yells out for them to stop. They turn and shoot at him and then he wakes in the emergency room. After discharging and headed back to his room and finding it ransacked, he finds that he’s on the hook for Timothy’s murder AND he still has to find out who kill Dr. Taggert several decades ago. He recruits a few of his trusted friends because, hey, this is New Orleans and it seems that everyone is out to get him already.

This was definitely a page-turner from word go. I could never figure out who was on who’s side, or who was after who, or who actually killed Dr. Taggert until the end. This was a fabulous mystery book. I can’t wait to try some of the others in the theories.
