It’s 1907, Germany, an occult groups has raised the swastika flag and summoned a “New Man”. When the call is answered and we fast forward World War II. It seems almost probably that the devil had a hand in Adolph Hitler. Weaved into the history of the times. Things that we didn’t study much of was the day to day life of the German’s during the war. Theo Engel owns a factory, he is struggling with keeping the factory functional, not becoming part of the Nazi machine, supporting his family, worrying about friends and wondering if his son will ever return from the Russian Front.
It is obvious that Ray has done his research and spent a great deal of time mixing the real, the surreal and spun this into a great historic thriller. I had a bit of a time settling in because the story goes back and forth between the two time periods, but once in it became easier with each page and I kept going to find out what spell binding ending was in store.
