Playing Hurt by Gerald Nardella #review#

51WcuMHdSDL._SY177_

The fear and insecurity in growing up in a small town that offers little opportunity and few role models, exacerbated by an uncertain future and pressure by emotions difficult to control, inspired Gerald L. Nardella to write this novel. Life’s struggle can be lonely and painful. Gerald grew up in a small town, experiencing firsthand the insecurities from living in a broken home. Those insecurities still haunt him to this day.

review1
This is a story about teenage life in a small town in Texas in 1960-61 and a few nights that will change the lives of Brian,Deanie and Dick forever. The book starts after Brian the quarterback and Deanie a cheerleader have had a big fight. What follows is the normal teenage angst and problems facing most high schoolers. There’s break ups, make ups, you’re typical high school rivalry and life in a small town in 1960.
When a blast from Deanie’s past shows up the troubles multiply.
This is a really good look back into the past, the characters are well written and the story keeps you interested from start to finish. I really enjoyed it and would recommend this book to anyone 13 plus. This book is an OnlineBookClub.org  Book of the Day.

Check Mate by Sheri Lyn #review

Sassy Ever After: Check Mate (Kindle Worlds Novella)
By Sheri Lyn
M/M

Tucker “Rook” Jameson is having an interesting week. First, he finds a body, then he finds his mate… the new Sheriff. Someone has decided to make the pack of Blue Creek pay, but for what is the question.

Sheriff West Graelin moved to Blue Creek for a change of pace. Instead in his first week, he meets a naked man over a dead body who tempts him beyond his ability to think straight. Now the bodies are piling up and their killer is taunting them.

It’s time to team up in more than one way. Love, lust, laughter, friendship and murder…It’s just another day in this small town.

Excerpt:

“Hello?” A strong masculine voice called out, “I was told someone was here waiting.”

“I’m here.” Rook responded as he buttoned his jeans and stepped out of the shadows of the overhanging tree.

“And you are?” The voice asked with authority ringing in every word.

Rook smiled softly. “The guy you’re looking for.”

“Excuse me?”“Name’s Tucker Jameson, but most everyone calls me Rook. You’re new around here, aren’t you?”

“I’m the new Sheriff. Are you the one who found the body?”

“You smell amazing and yes I did.”

The sheriff cocked one eyebrow and smirked slightly. “Excuse me? Did you just say I smelled good?”

“Amazing, but yeah.”

“I’m standing ten feet away from a dead body and on the opposite side as you. How can you possibly know what I smell like?”Rook laughed. “Never been round shifters I take it.”

“No, I haven’t.” The sheriff shrugged.

The Journey: The Ultimate Power Book 1. by Shadahyah Elizabeth # review#

51yCMONrReL._SY177_
“All bear witness to my words, for the time is nigh. For on the night of a purple moon in the village of Terra, three sisters shall give birth to three daughters, who will lead the chosen to the ultimate power.”

Words many had forgotten: Until now.

On her 18th birthday, Elizabeth Kimache is approached by a mysterious stranger. What she first believed to be a marriage proposal, soon turns into a nightmare as she and her father are forced to run away from home with the stranger as their guild. With the threat of an unknown enemy approaching, Elizabeth will soon discover a truth so deadly, it could cost her life.

This book is an Online bookclub.org Book of the day.
This is a YA story of a prophecy involving three teenage girls. Now normally I’m not a big fan of YA but after the first few pages my interest was piqued and I was hooked. I read well past my usual bed time. I couldn’t put it down, there’s more twists and turns than a mountain road.
“All bear witness to my words, for the time is nigh. For on the night of a purple moon in the village of Terra, three sisters shall give birth to three daughters, who will lead the chosen to the ultimate power.”
Elizabeth, Jasmine and Renee are best friends and also share the same birthday. On the day of their 18th birthday their village is attacked and the barely escape with their lives. King Ramos is after the 3 girls that possess the ultimate power and believe s that to control the girls is to control the world. He sends Prince’s Caleb and Hugo to do his dirty work and capture the girls. The girls know nothing of their powers all they know is they can communicate telepathically, now they’re on the run.
There’s a lot of danger and many more questions than answers. I really enjoyed this story and can’t wait to read more of the story. My only complaint and I understand why, but so many questions are left unanswered due to the next book but I’d like to know more of the story of the prophecy and the girls lives. I’ll have to read book 2 and hopefully it will answer all my questions.

EXCERPTS (Please choose only ONE to use with your post):

Excerpt One:

Little Red Dress

Dani called from down the hall. “Did you find a pair?”

“Operation stiletto was a six-inch success.” Rolling onto her elbow, Mia snagged the bag and pulled out the shoebox. In a few hours, she’d hit the doors of the S & L in these unless she took a spill—

“Here. Knock ‘em dead.” Dani commanded her attention with an outstretched hand. Over her roommate’s finger hung a hanger, and she waved a tiny scrap of red leather in Mia’s direction.

“Interesting. But no.” Her brow knitted as she stared at the crisscrossing laces of the tiny corset. “When I said outfit, I was thinking something larger than a rubber band.”

“This dress will help you fit in.” Tutting, her roommate thrust the fetish dress into her hands. “Thank me later when you land your first job.”

“By chance does that job involve a street corner?”

“Funny,” Dani replied. “You’re stalling.”

“You do realize that I’m the one who’s gotta fit into this little number. Operative word: little.” Mia rose and held up the dress probably two sizes too small. “Just where am I supposed to fit my boobs?”

“Okay, I can see you’re going to overanalyze this into the ground.” Dani snapped her fingers. “Let’s go. Time to change. Stat.”

Rather than waste time arguing, she’d just try on the dress and make her point when a body part or two sprang loose.

Love and Famiglia by Lyssa Layne #Review

Love and Famiglia
The DiDominzio Novellas
Lyssa Layne
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Date of Publication: 3/13/2017
ASIN: B06VVKY7DV
Number of pages: 400
Word Count: 157,013
Cover Artist: Amanda Walker
Book Description:
Meet the DiDominzio family—fiery, loud, Italian. Francesca, Antonia, Gianna, and Carmine were raised by their strict, old school Italian father. Each sibling has their own journey but how they find their happily ever after definitely isn’t easy.
The King and the Pawn – Francesca, the baby of the family, wants nothing more than to fulfill her dream of being a fashion designer. Unfortunately, Papa DiDominzio will stop at nothing to squash her dreams and lead her toward the traditional career of the women in their family. Francesca concocts the perfect plan to bring home a man her father will hate in hopes that he’ll make a deal so she can still reach her dreams.
Not in Love – Antonia, the sexy second to youngest DiDominzio, exudes nothing but sex appeal, especially with her non-traditional blue eyes. After dating one man after another, Antonia thinks she’s finally found the man of her dreams until she realizes the one she really wants has been right in front of her since they were children.
One Day as a Lion – Gianna, the eldest DiDominzio sibling, is the only one that has followed Papa’s wishes by marrying an Italian man and working in his restaurant. While her brother and sisters suspect something isn’t right with her marriage, none of them can prove any differently. However, there is one man that will do everything in his power to save Gianna from the man she calls her husband.
Destined For You – The only male sibling, Carmine is more like a second father to his sisters than their brother. There’s only two things that are important to Carmine-his family and his club. Keeping up with his sisters and running his successful business leaves him no time to find a mate. As luck would have it, fate falls into his lap, changing his world, in more ways than one… and not necessarily for the best.

Excerpt:
“But, Papa, this is the opportunity of a
lifetime! Do you know how many aspiring fashion designers have the chance to
build their own line of clothing at only twenty-four?”
Desperation.
Yes, there’s definitely desperation in my voice, but there’s nothing left. I’ve
begged, I’ve pleaded, I’ve cried, but nothing has broken my father’s old-school
Italian demeanor. This is a last ditch effort to convince him to sign off on
the trust my Noni DiDominzio left for me so I can fulfill my career aspiration
of my own women’s fashion wear. My boss is moving to France and has offered me
to take over his line, giving me free reign on designs. All I have to do is
come up with three months rent and it’s mine.
“Francesca, in
nine months, the trust will be yours to do as you please. However, I suggest you
look at how your siblings used their inheritance. Their money was used to buy a
house, a car, even start a business which is how Noni intended for you children
to use it.”
I throw back my
head and let out an exasperated sigh. Lifting my head up to look at my father,
I take a deep breath, knowing that I’m walking on thin ice. My father, Andrea
DiDominzio, is Italian through and through. He’s got the full head of dark
hair, the olive skin tone, brown eyes, and the man sticks strongly to his
Italian beliefs despite the change in times. My siblings and I look exactly
like our father, except for Antonia, my middle sister, who has blue eyes.
However, we all share the loud, feisty attitudes which we’ve inherited from our
father, his father, and his father’s father. Being the baby of the bunch, I
have to fight louder than the others to be heard, but it still doesn’t mean I
get my way.
Speaking calmly,
I nod, “I would be doing the exact same as Carmine. He used his money to buy
the nightclub. I’ll be starting my career with Noni’s money. Papa, this is just
the beginning of what I can do with my skills.”
Papa leans back
in his plush leather chair on the other side of his desk, his fingers steepled
together. He’s not smiling with his lips but I can see it in his eyes.
“Francesca, you know I don’t agree with your choice of profession and I can
assure you Noni wouldn’t either. When you turn twenty-five, the money is yours
so you can do as you please then.”
“But, Papa, the
opportunity will be gone by then and I’ll be out of a job!” I stomp my foot
like a child not getting their way.
“Mia figlia, you
know that you always have a job at the restaurant which would be an excellent
place for you to meet a good Italian man to settle down with.”
He’s smirking.
The man is seriously smirking at me while he stomps all over my dreams. I’m not
even going to entertain his suggestion. Turning my back, I grab my jacket off
the chair and mutter under my breath in Italian.
As I open the door, my father calls to me.
“Francesca, ladies don’t speak that way. I’ll see you in a few days at our
Christmas celebration weekend.

With a huff, I slam the door to his office and
let out a scream. My father is infuriating but I’m not giving up on my dream.
One way or another, I will have my clothes in a show in New York Fashion Week.
Just wait, Papa, I’ll make you proud despite not having your blessing.
Love & Famiglia is a set of novellas that tell the story of the DiDominzio siblings and how they went through everything that was expected out of them in order to find their place and happiness. Let me be honest, I don’t normally read a whole series when each book talks about a different couple. Nevertheless, this one was way too tempting. I do have a think for Italian’s and their intense personalities. The first three novellas (The King and the Pawn, Not in Love and One Day as a Lion) talk about the three DiDominzio sisters. Each is unique, in her own way, and will pull you into the story from the very first page. Personally, I fell a little more related and attached to Francesca and Gianna. The first one is trying her best to accomplish her dreams even though she has her doubts about having what it takes. The latter does as her papa wishes, doing what is expected instead of finding her own happiness. I believe that a lot of women have felt this way before, therefore, making it very easy to relate to these Italian ladies. The difficulties both of them face will pull your heartstrings.
I must warn you, though. These novellas deal with some difficult themes such as domestic abuse, violence and self-doubt, among other things. I must confess I did shout at some characters for withstanding so many hardships on their own. Nevertheless, the book has some very romantic, sweet and swoon worthy scenes that you don’t really want to miss. Now, regarding the last sister, well, she will be loved by all those that like the friends/acquaintances to lovers trope.
Another character worthy to be mentioned is the heir of the DiDominzio family, Carmine. I loved he cares so much about his family. He exudes this protective alpha male aura that will grab the female attention. Honestly, it is quite surprising that the author added the brother’s story. It is quite popular to focus in the story of the sister’s. Nonetheless, it is quite refreshing to hear the make point of view of the life in the DiDomizio family and all the expectations and responsibilities it entails. After all, who said that fairy tales, even sexy and dangerous ones, don’t always need to focus or start with a damsel in distress.

The Pursuit of Time by William H. May #review#

51Qz94j7qULIn the year 2038 as the world struggles to adapt to energy shortages and the effects of global warming, advances in medical technology make human brain transplants possible. This story chronicles the effect this advance has on society and the fight by one dying man to extend his life with the help of his attorney friend. It challenges stereotypically held views of the elderly and their capabilities.
review1
This book is a OnLineBookClub.org Book of the Day.
I totally enjoyed this book,  it’s a book of “what if”. What if you got a second chance at life. What if you only got that chance if you could prove something you did 50 years ago. What if you had to convince some judges what you’re saying really happened.
In the year 2038 brain transplants are not only a possibility they’re done. There’s a transplant program and due to the high demand the application process is quite extreme. Transplants are awarded by a tribunal to certain qualified individuals, self-scarifice, betterment of society and heroism are only a few of the reasons to qualify. The odds of approval aren’t much better than hitting the lottery.
John Axelton is a 76 yr old retired professor has only approximately two years to live. He’s decided to apply for the program.
Phillip Douglas is an attorney who’s speciality is transplant applications. He once was a student of John’s, so when John asks him to help he’s more than willing to help him.
John tells him the story of an act of heroism that happens 50 years ago, in 1982 way before the transplants started. Now Phil has the job of proving John’s story is true and getting him in front of the Tribunal to get him approved.
This story also bring up the question of who really deserves a second shot at life ?  Also who really has the right to decide who deserves that second chance?
The characters were well written and the descriptions of Colorado were amazing. I could picture the beauty Colorado and of the mountains thanks to the authors vivid descriptions. My only complaint is this books premise is good but it took me a while to get into the story as it starts out kind of slow. I’m glad I stuck with it as it’s an interesting story once it gets further in. I also felt some of the characters were just added for filler but I definitely didn’t like the State Rep Tom he was an ass lol.

CASE Revelations by Savannah Verte

Blurb:
A simple mistake brings the world to its knees with no notice or time to prepare. Young and inexperienced, first term president Baron York will have a lot to answer for when it’s finally done. If, that is, there’s anyone left to answer to.
Lessons from The Great Depression make an encore performance at the Hamilton property as they try to stay alive…and sane. Where were you when the world went dark and everything stopped?

Excerpt:
I wanted to be pissed off, that once again, I was going to be doing the lifting part, but judging by Christian’s demeanor, after his catatonic display, I kept my opinion to myself. After he was in the house and the door closed I spun on Barney. I should’ve been more careful, but my second thoughts were too late as I accused, “What the hell happened this morning?”
Barney’s single finger flashed up, and his face brooked no attitude. “Take it down a notch young lady, and I will explain.”
I paced away and back several times before I had myself under control. Nodding, I acquiesced. “Okay.”
Barney heaved a heavy sigh as he leaned on the trunk. His arms folded up at the elbows and his hands roughed his beard. “There weren’t as many people this morning as there were last night, but the people this morning didn’t have their act together. It was mass chaos everywhere we went. Getting in and getting out was an exercise in navigating a stampede. People were pushing, shoving, fighting, and there were enough weapons around to arm a small militia. Very few had vehicles that were functioning. I had challenges navigating the crowd that swarmed the car. More than one tried, but failed,” he gave me a look that clearly relayed the severity of the situation, “to take possession of the car. At one point, while Christian was still in it.”
.

Awesome story telling by this author.  College students dropped into a post-apocalyptic style situation.  She gets you involved immediately and keeps you turning the page with action and a connection to the characters.  Realistic scenarios and responses make you feel like you are right there with them from page one.

The ending was interesting.  It could easily be an opening for a series, but at the same time, it is definitely a stand alone story.  As an independent reviewer for Romance Authors that Rock, I gave it a full five hearts.  Good for any age, I think some of the younger teens would not only enjoy this but maybe it would open their eyes to how good we have things and how easily it could all go away.

After that, she’ll be working on her competition piece, Chasing Daylight for Cherry Adair’s Finish the Damn Book Challenge, she has an upcoming anthology work called Immortal Alchemy, and an untitled short story for a charity anthology that is a TBA release. Savannah loves air hockey but completely sucks at it. She loves good jazz, good scotch, and antiques but also old rock, a quiet tea, and a tidy home.
