He went into the Running never planning to find a mate. She was frightened, with no idea what to expect…Ready. Set. RUN.
Blythe has been summoned to be in the Running; an annual event where shifters are let out of their jails for twelve hours and released into an arena to find a mate. Every year, ten human girls are placed in the stadium, armed, and given three ways out: elude the shifters and remain uncaptured, kill one and escape, or be caught and become their captor’s mate. Forever.

Killian is a tiger shifter with a dark past that has left him cold and believing that love is a weakness. He never thought his chance would come, but this year he’s been called up to participate in the Running and will be forced to select a mate, knowing that he will never truly love her.

When the two lock eyes in the arena, a shiver of fear and lust runs down Blythe’s spine. Will she be able to escape? Does she even want to? And if she’s claimed by the hardened man staring back at her, will she be able to make him believe in love again?

Blythe is a young woman who’s ready to begin her life in earnest when her family receives a letter. Their family has been selected to send someone to The Running, and Blythe soon finds herself leaving her family to participate in this mandatory event. She soon finds herself being hunted by various shifters, each of whom is looking for a mate to capture and take back with him to the compound called Lazarus. Being captured by a tiger shifter named Killian, Blythe enters into the world of shifters and finds more than she bargained for.

Hayley Cyrus has created a world that not only has supernatural elements in the shifters but also captures a post-apocalyptic feel as well in the aforementioned Running. While Blythe is a relatively innocent and has been sequestered by being in a family without many conveniences, I still found myself wondering more about this world and at points didn’t quite understand why things were set up the way they were. The main elements of a romance were very definitely present, especially with the volatile temperaments of the confined characters The world itself just remained more of a question mark to me.

That said, though, the author does give us several strong characters and takes time to build up the various relationships that the protagonist builds as she restarts her life. Its in this area that the writer shines, and this book is a very readable diversion. As I’ve said frequently before on other reviews, I’m curious to see her further works as she (hopefully) continues on her writing career.

Beauty and the Beast (Box Set)

The Beauty
Sharp teeth and claws don’t scare Belle. What does? The man in her village who won’t take no for an answer. So when a monster in the woods imprisons her father, Belle is easily convinced to take his place. Things at the castle aren’t exactly the fairy tale she thought they would be, including disgruntled servants who are less than happy that she’s there, naughty library books that magically appear in her room, and a vengeful enchantress determined to finish the job she started.

The Beast
It’s been a decade since he was cursed, unable to leave the castle, but his servants can come and go as they like. Even if they aren’t exactly themselves anymore. And worse? It’s all his fault – his foolish decisions that cost them their humanity, his family their lives and his kingdom its ruler. So when a beautiful girl falls into his lap, he does his best to scare her away, no matter how bad it makes him look. Why? Because he knows that whoever did this isn’t done yet, and there are more dangers in his corner of the woods than Belle knows.

When worst comes to worst, and it looks like they’re about to lose everything, can Belle and her Beast learn to trust each other enough to find their happily ever after?

Beauty and the Beast like it should have been written! Looking for her father, Bell finds her destiny. The Beast is cursed to live a lonely life.
Nikki Dean knows how to tell a story, how to pull a reader in. We know the story of Beauty and the Beast, but this is not the story you grew up with. This one has heat, so much my tablet almost cought on fire. 😁. With “knowing” what happens it wasn’t like I was reading the same story, it was still fresh and new. I could feel how they felt about each other. I’m happy I read this as a box set, couldn’t take waiting for them to come out.
Nikki Dean will be releasing: Little Red Riding Hood (book 1 out by Christmas), The Little Mermaid and Snow White. I’m looking forward to them coming out.
I recommend this series for anyone that likes ROMANCE with their romance.

The Witch’s Heart by Iris Kincaid #Review

A Cozy Witch Mystery

Margo Bailey never expected to live long enough to see her thirtieth birthday. A heart defect that she’s had since birth has taught her to live cautiously and expect the worst.

On the other hand, Lilith Hazelwood, the most powerful witch in town, expected to live a freakishly long life. But she is killed under sinister circumstances, and her precious and powerful organs are bestowed to several clueless beneficiaries, like the faint-hearted Margo Bailey. Lilith’s spirit lingers on, filled with anger, seeking vengeance.

Margo’s new lease on life does not come without complications – a local murder investigation, an old friend in need, an intriguing and persistent young cop, and some unsettling new powers. What will unfold when a timid young woman inherits the heart of a powerful witch?

Next up in this cozy witch mystery series – The Witch’s Eyes.

Sign up for the Iris Kincaid Witch Watch and I’ll let you know as soon as it comes out.

This book is the 1st in the One Part Witch cozy mystery series and ends in an HEA. Margot is a recipient of a new heart. The deceased donor was a witch and many of her organs were donated. The witch, Lilith, was murdered and she haunts the recipients in order to get them to solve her murder. Margo is the first recipient. She went from sickly and cautious to daring and full of health. A murder mystery in her town pulls her in and she tries to figure out what exactly happened. Alongside her sleuthing, she is discovers she now has witch abilities. A friendly witch teaches her how to use her new powers.

>The romance involves Margot and the police detective, Finn. Finn is a really good guy. Their chemistry is strong, but the romantic scenes are strictly G rated.  The book is a fun journey involving spells, mystery and romance. Though not particularly suspenseful, the book does keep you on your toes as to who the murderer is. The series will follow the other transplant recipients as Lilith tries to get one of them to do her bidding and solve her murder. Margot was willing, but solved a different murder.
>I am a reviewer for Romance Author’s that Rock. I am giving this book 4 hearts. The story is a perfect cozy mystery, with glimpses of sexy romance.

Fake by Haley Ladawn #Review #mafia #romance

Swept up in Elliot’s chaos yet again, Lily finds herself on the run, and she doesn’t even know who or what she’s running from. Is she being hunted, or simply haunted by her past? The lines blur between what’s real and fake.

Who can you trust when the whole world is out to get you? No one.

Mafia syndicate with a bit of romance. This book took me a bit to get into but once I did I felt completed to find out what was happening. There are so many plot twists and character development changes this book really keeps you in your toes. Just when you think you’ve figured something out it changes. At times there seemed to be to much going on and you could get lost and confused but the author brought you back. Based on content this book is for 18+. I an independent reviewer for Romance Author’s That Rock and I am giving this 4 hearts

Betting on Cinderella by Petie McCarty #Review

Garrett Tucker inherits his grandfather’s casino empire and steps into the reclusive billionaire’s shoes as the “Prince of Vegas.” His first act is to buy a bankrupt casino in Biloxi. When he discovers embezzling in his new operation, Garrett goes undercover. His prime suspect is the new finance supervisor–the spitfire brunette who stole his heart at first sight.

Andi Ryan moves to Biloxi to care for her godmother and takes a job as finance supervisor for the renovated Bayou Princess casino. She discovers someone is skimming from the till and starts her own investigation, worried she will be blamed for the theft when the new owner discovers her godmother has a gambling addiction.

Garrett’s rival Vegas competitor has sent in a spy to ruin the Bayou Princess, and Garrett and Andi are forced to work together to prove her innocence and discover the identity of their casino spy.

This was a really interesting story! While it sticks to your basic boy-meets-girl romance, it’s the back stories and intrigues the author tosses in that really make it awesome! The characters attracted me instantly, the heroine is sweet but not completely incapable of having a backbone and the hunk is thoughtful but not perfect.

As he struggles with personal tragedy and sudden changes, Garrett is in danger of missing out on a fantastic woman. Can he come to his senses and balance both business and pleasure? Will she forgive him for his deception, cause you KNOW she will find out. They always do!

As an independent reviewer for Romance Authors that Rock, I gave this one a full five hearts for touching mine several times! It’s got a few steamy spots, so keep the kids supervised!

Saving the Miracle Worker by Stacey Davidson #Review #Paranormal

Paranormal Vampire Romance: Saving the Miracle Worker
She’s beautiful -tough and vulnerable at the same time. Valerie’s pain, in the form of excruciating migraines, gives birth to other people’s miracles. There’s something different about this man – an old-world charm that women can’t seem to resist. He’s zeroed in on Valerie, but why? She’d love to trust him, for him to be her soft place to fall in an impossible world, but she doesn’t quite dare. Is Mr. Shcoltz there to save the miracle worker? Or to take possession of her and use her power for his own wicked agenda?

I’m an independent reviewer for Romance Authors That Rock.
I’ve had the pleasure of reading other books by this author before, so I knew going in that this book was going to be out of this world. And it didn’t disappoint. At first I was a little apprehensive about reading it though, because it being a vampire romance. Being that vampires are at the end of my favorite books to read. Lionshifters being at the top! I’m so happy that I was given the opportunity to read this book. I could not put it down. The plot was right on. For a vampire romance it was sweet, it had romance and passion. Each page was better than the last.
Michael knew when the first time he saw Valerie that she was his, his Bind. Which is like a mate. His one true love, to love for the rest of his life and being a vampire that is a VERY long time.
I recommend this book to anyone 18 and over that enjoys a little BITE with the romance. Warning this book has a trigger, an attempted rape. Hope you enjoy the book as much as I did.
Looked the book up so I can post my review but NOTHING comes up for it. So here is my review. Let me know when you need me to post it.

A Love Restrained by Becky Flade #Review

Old secrets, new threats…What are they willing to sacrifice?

Philadelphia police officer Kylee Parker is dedicated to protecting and serving. She sees the work in absolutes: right and wrong, black and white, good guys and bad guys. That is, until she chases a drug dealer into a dead-end alley and finds the bad boy she had a painful crush on throughout her teen years has turned into a more dangerous and more attractive man.

Jayson Donovan knows he doesn’t deserve someone as good as Kylee Parker. As the right hand man to a local drug-pushing mobster, he’s solidly on the wrong side of Kylee’s moral compass. But he can’t help reaching for her time and again when he knows he shouldn’t.

Even when his secrets threaten them both.

This 3 part book follows the unlikely relationship between Kylee and Jayson. Part 1 reunites cop Kylee with criminal Jayson, whom she had a pretty massive crush on in high school. Jayson had a horrible childhood and never felt good enough for Kylee. Although, she’s troubled by his work, they begin their relationship, until tragedy strikes Kylee and Jayson is pressured to leave. Part 2 brings Jayson back years down the road and had me screaming “I knew it!!” Twice. Not going to say what, but it’s a great twist. Now they have to figure out their new relationship with many challenges. Part 3 brings them a new tragedy and brings Kylee and Jayson back together. This book was FULL of different twists and action. All characters were full-bodied characters and even supporting characters were interesting. My only complaint was that in scenes that there were multiple speakers, it was hard to decipher who was speaking as it’s not clearly written. There are also a few editing issues, but I liked it enough to still give it 5 hearts.

Welcome to Gameland by S.W. Tanpepper

6 Hackers, 1 Game… and 10,000 Undead.

Everyone loves Survivalist, a live-action, virtual reality show based on Arc Entertainment’s The Game, where cybernetically controlled zombies do battle in a video arcade in the middle of a Long Island wasteland. It’s to die for.

If you’re rich enough, you can buy your way in. If you’re desperate enough, you can volunteer to become one of the Undead Players. Jessie Daniels and her gang of computer hackers plan to break their way in.

Welcome to GAMELAND. Access Restricted.

EPISODE 1: Deep Into The Game

A reckless, end-of-summer plan leads Jessie and her friends onto Long Island hoping to catch a glimpse of the infected victims of a decades-old outbreak. But while breaking in might be easy, getting back out is a hell of a killer. It doesn’t take long before they realize they’re part of The Game.

Deep Into the Game is the first book in the hi-tech dystopian thriller GAMELAND. Structured on television’s The Walking Dead and Law and Order, the nearly 400,000-word series consists of eight individual episodes, first published monthly between May and December 2012. All are available digitally in single and multi-episode packages, as well as in an omnibus edition. Also available in print.

Not recommended for readers under age 15.

One of the things I abhor the most in series fiction is the gratuitous cliffhanger ending, designed only to get the reader to buy the next installment. And, while this book does end on a cliffhanger, I did not feel it a gratuitous one because the author warned the reader up front (and this is why it is important to read the author’s notes) that these books are episodic, somewhat like the reality television formula on which it was based. Even though I was warned, I was still surprised that the book ended right in the middle of the action, and I immediately went and downloaded the next installment.
I am a huge fan of post-apocalyptic fiction and the most important aspect to any sort of not-here, not-now fiction (sci fi, fantasy, etc) is internal consistency of the world, and Tanpepper has done an excellent job in creating a world that has enough throwback to the present to ground it in reality, but with enough foreign for the reader to believe that he or she is reading about an authentic possibility. Woven into this well-crafted world are characters that show that going through a zombie apocalypse isn’t enough to change the fundamental nature of teenagers. So, while I did not really care for any of the characters as people (they each had their own annoying qualities), it certainly wasn’t because they were poorly written.
I ended episode one wanting more of the story, and that is just about the best compliment I can give to a book that ended on a cliffhanger, which I despise. LOL Because of the subject matter and some of the descriptions, I would only recommend the book to mature readers 15+.

Cephora by Danielle Fin #Review

What I came away from this book with was the decision that I’d have loved for the author to flesh it out a little more, as some of the storytelling was thin in places. I would have liked to learn more about Temaira’s background and what the project is that they are working on. I’m not sure if this book is a second in a series, but it certainly reads like one because there are a number of instances where it felt like I was supposed to know some of the background information, and I did not, and that left me wanting more. All that being said, I very much enjoyed this fast read. It brought to mind the movie Avatar, though Zenubia was far less foreign a place than Pandora, the world in Avatar. The people of Zenubia are very human-like in both appearance and behavior, even if the behavior is somewhat arcane and outdated to the modern reader. Because of the adult nature of several of the scenes, I would only recommend this book to readers 18+.
