Could you share a bed with a smoking-hot stranger?
I’m stuck in my hometown with a depressing job and no future. So when my best friend asks me to drive all the way to NYC so I can be her maid of honor, I jump on the chance to escape. Or I would have, if my car hadn’t broken down. I’ve never been lucky. Then HE shows up—a guy straight out of a fitness magazine, wearing a sharp suit—and he actually fixes my engine. I’d love it if he’d fix a few other things of mine, but I’m in a rush. I don’t think I’ll see him again. Except here he is, staying at the same hotel as me. Turns out they lost my reservation. My mystery man offers to save the day again; I can sleep in my car and probably get arrested for it, or I can share his bed. He says nothing will happen between us… unless I want it to. I should know better than to hook up with someone I met 24 hours ago. I might regret this in the morning, but for once in my life? I just want to get lucky. Too bad I don’t know who this man really is. And when I find out… My whole world is going to change.

Lost Treasures of the Heart
by Charlie Most & Charlene Keel

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Blended Genre (Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Architect Jonathan West is on a big project when he learns his wife has been unfaithful. On a fishing trip in North Carolina’s Outer Banks, he’s wondering what to do about his marriage when he sees a ghost ship. On it is a spectral woman, gazing at him with a plea in her eyes.

Jonathan buys a house on the beach near the sighting and finds an old sea chest washed up there. Its contents, including a miniature portrait, reveal that it belonged to Kate Russell, captain of the Royal Thomas, which sank in 1721.

It’s the same woman Jonathan saw on the ghost ship, and her journal describes in her own words a life of piracy and sweeping romance. As past and present collide, he starts seeing her everywhere, waking and sleeping. With a haunting desperation, he senses she wants something from him. If he can figure it out and find a way to help her, he believes her spirit will finally rest.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EXCERPT
Stepping Into the Past
Stepping out on the deck he felt instantly refreshed. There was a breeze coming off the ocean and it was the perfect time for a walk on the beach. Wisdom pervaded at the last minute and he took a flashlight. He had no idea how long he walked but he was vaguely aware of laughing softly to himself, delighted that he’d been victorious in opening the chest. Then he had to blink away tears as he recalled parts of Kate’s story. Why had she delivered it into his hands?
And what did she want from him?
He knew she wanted something—that’s why she had come to him. If he could figure it out, maybe he could help her. Then maybe her spirit could to rest.
At last, he returned to the beach house and to his work table, where he leafed through the ship’s log once more, reading bits and pieces of it until his eyes grew heavy. Taking the sea chest with him, he set it gently on the bureau in his bedroom, as if he could not bear to be parted from it. He didn’t think he would be able to sleep but he stretched out on the bed, on top of the spread, and closed his eyes, trying to envision what life was like for Kate on these barrier strips of land that were just barely protected from the ravages of the sea.
A little while later, something woke him. He glanced at the spot where he’d placed Kate’s little trunk. Somehow during the night, it had fallen (or been placed, he thought) onto the floor. It was open and he was stunned to see a bright light coming from it, pouring out of it and streaming upwards, toward the ceiling. Amazed, he sat up slowly, scarcely daring to breathe.
The light, which had a perfect oval shape, was about the size of a full-length mirror. Jonathan got up and went to investigate. As he got closer, he realized it wasn’t just a light.
It was a portal—and he could look through it, as if through an open doorway. What he saw within was unbelievable.
Kate was there, in her ship’s cabin, fully visible through the shimmering gateway. She was sitting at a desk with candlelight flickering across her lovely features. She was wearing a white linen nightgown and her long auburn hair fell past her shoulders in a waterfall of waves. She was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen.
He watched silently as she wrote in the journal—that same journal he had found—with a quill pen. Tears were streaming down her face and a tiny dog—a Chihuahua—was lying on her bunk, looking at her with concern. As she was about to dip her feathered pen into the inkwell, she beckoned the dog to come to her. Taking it in her arms, she whispered to it.
“There, there, my little Stewie. I know I have you and my dear babe, who is the treasure of my life. But it looks like I am destined to be alone, with no husband nor even a lover to comfort me. But there now—we’ll be home soon. I can only hope there is still a home to go to.”
Why is she alone? Jonathan wondered. What happened to Fournier? Did he abandoned her, or betray her as her first love had done?
Involuntarily, he reached out to her. To his astonishment, his arm went inside the portal and he saw the light from her candle reflecting off his hand. He put his other hand in, and then his head and shoulders. She looked up, surprised, and he could see she’d been crying. Her need drew him to her and he stepped into the oval of light.
And he was in the captain’s cabin, aboard the Royal Thomas, with Kate.
Without a word—for words were not necessary—he went to her. She was so petite, and very young—not much more than twenty. She looked up at him with such sorrow he could not bear it. Trying to comfort her, he wrapped his arms around her. Sobbing, she buried her face against his chest and he felt her pain, her loneliness. Holding her close, he lightly stroked her back, inhaling the pure sweetness of her. She looked up at him, puzzled, and then standing on tiptoe, she kissed his cheek. Her innocence, her fragrant body against his—it was a bliss unlike anything Jonathan had ever known, and he would have been happy to stay with her there—wherever there was—forever.
A bright, relentless sun blasting through the window woke him the next morning. He was alone in his bed—and there was no light coming out of the open chest, which was back on the bureau where he’d put it.
It had been a dream. He knew that. He knew it was impossible to step through some kind of weird light, three hundred years into the past. Sighing and rubbing his eyes, he came back to reality.
Just a dream. Nothing more.
But when he got out of bed and put his bare feet on the floor, one of them landed on something sharp. Something sharp on one end and soft and feathery on the other. He looked down, puzzled, and logic flew out the window.
It was a quill pen—the pen with which Kate had been writing. It was lying on the floor next to his bed, in his bedroom at the beach house.
review1
Such a fascinating mixture of spirits from the past and modern day life.  Action and suspense on every page!  The characters are well developed and the story keeps you interested from the very beginning.  Twists and turns in the plot line kept me wondering what was going to happen next!
As an independent reviewer for Romance Authors that Rock, I gave this one a full five beating hearts as mine was pounding from the suspenseful ride!
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
The sea has always played a dominant part in Charlie Most’s life. It seemed to be calling him, even as a child, bringing calm when he seemed intent on raising hell. As an adult, he channeled his restless energy into successfully running his construction company, Baltimore Steel Erectors. One moonlit night, while fishing in the Outer Banks, Most and his pals saw the silhouette of an ancient square-rigged vessel skirting across the horizon. They all watched as it disappeared once again into the Graveyard of the Atlantic, and the mists of eternity. That moment changed his life forever and he knew he had a story to tell. Lost Treasures of the Heart is his first novel.
Charlene Keel has written over a dozen novels and how-to books. Shadow Train, the final installment of her YA supernatural trilogy, won a Paranormal Romance Guild Reviewer’s Choice Award, and The Congressman’s Wife (for Red Sky Presents) is getting rave reviews. Her new blended-genre novel, Lost Treasures of the Heart, has just been released.
Keel’s editorial assignments include The Health of Nations, a book on political philosophy, and That Nation Might Live, a moving tribute to Sarah Bush Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s stepmother. Her TV credits include Fantasy Island and Days of Our Lives, and her book, Rituals, was the basis for the first made-for-syndication soap opera. Book Description:
As soon as Poppy Parker turns 21, the star of a popular TV show about witch detectives discovers she has supernatural powers off the set as well as on. When the show is canceled, she returns home to figure out how to harness the magic brewing inside her.
Freaked out by these recent paranormal gifts, Poppy just wants to fit in, so when she’s asked to serve as a judge for the annual Bloomin’ Belles youth beauty competition she readily agrees.
But when the pageant’s snooty director drops dead and Poppy’s friend is arrested,
the former TV sleuth sets out to uncover the real killer, only to find…
the business of beauty can be deadly.
Excerpt:
Skylar’s twin
sister Mads called while I was driving to the convention center. “Are you
really going over there? I can’t believe they’re going to continue this
pageant.”
“So you heard
about the murder?”
“Yeah. Skylar
told me last night when she got home. It’s awful.”
“Yes, but you
know how it is. The show must go on! Surely you can’t be that surprised.” I was
only beginning to understand the importance of these competitions to their
participants, and I could picture pageant moms dragging their glitzed-up
toddlers over the dead bodies of fallen competitors. The way zombies climbed
over each other to get to the top of the pile in movies—only prettier.
“Are they sure
it was a murder? She didn’t just have a heart attack or something?” I could
hear the anxiety creeping into Mads’ voice, and I didn’t blame her. Our little
town was supposed to be safe. Murders didn’t happen here. That was the sort of
thing that happened in the city across the bridge, not in our sleepy little
bedroom community.
“That’s what
they said, Mads, but I don’t think you need to worry. If it was a murder, you
can bet it was personal. Certainly not the doin’s of a mad man or a serial
killer. If Heather Morgan was murdered, it was by somebody who knew her and had
something to gain from her death. This was no a random act of violence.”
Excerpt:
It was true, Zion had only three more years left on his thirty-year life extension. He was tired and felt even more so as the days, weeks, months and years crept by. Zion spared a sidelong glance at his wife, whose head was down, eyes closed and hand still fiercely gripping his own. She wasn’t ready for the ride to end either, yet they both knew it was slowing, preparing to grind to its final halt and he would have to disembark, leaving her behind.
This thing with Ammon had eaten away at Zion for the last several months. Yet Ammon was simply an outlet for his own anger, fear, and depression. He was growing older, his hair thinner and grayer, and his stomach… well, let’s just say he’d had to use the services of a good seamstress over the years. Yet Lela was still as beautiful and fit as when they’d first met.
Zion didn’t begrudge Lela her slow aging or fine, alluring features. In fact, he loved that about her. What did bother him was that other men could see what he saw. Everything about Lela exuded intelligence, grace, dignity, strength, and beauty. Zion learned a long time ago, she could never see herself the way others did, especially men.
While Zion rarely entertained jealous thoughts before or cared much when he caught a male giving Lela an approving look, now he saw nothing but. Under the circumstances, the little signs of masculine appreciation for his beautiful wife enraged him.
“I’m sorry,” Zion spoke into the quiet breach, lifting Lela’s chin with his bruised hand.
Tears flooded her eyes. Even wet, they were still the most stunning eyes he’d ever seen. Picasso marble Zion thought the first time she’d looked at him—a combination of black, brown, gray, and white. Back then, they’d sparkled with intelligence and curiosity, now they glistened with pain. Lela wasn’t ready for this conversation. How could she be?
“No, it’s me who should apologize. I thought you were paranoid, seeing things that didn’t exist.”
“I acted like a jackass, a Neanderthal, damn near dragging you out of the banquet room before the function was over. Hell, I might as well as hoisted you over my shoulder and beat my chest like a caveman.”
He rubbed his thumb across her right cheek, then lips. “You’re an incredible woman, Lela.” Zion paused, nearly biting his tongue on his next words. The ones his selfish heart screamed at him to not utter. “You’ll live for a long time, probably another four or five decades. I only have three years left. For an Asiyan, you’ll be in your prime when I pass on.” His voice cracked when the held tears dropped from his wife’s eyes. She knew where he was going with this, Zion realized.
“You’ll have to go on without me, and I don’t want you to spend the next fifty years by yourself.”
“I won’t be by myself. I’ll have Xavier.” Lela pushed off the bed and moved away from him. She walked to the window, refusing to acknowledge the true meaning of his words.
Zion followed, watching her stern but sad image in the window. Needing to touch and reassure her, he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled Lela to him.
“The thought of another man being this close to you,” Zion whispered, stirring tendrils of her long hair, “makes me want to commit murder. When I heard Ammon offering for you, it took all of my self-control to not take a laser gun to him. The only thing I kept thinking was that he couldn’t have you. That you’re mine and mine alone.”
“Is that why you’ve been so angry these past few months?” She turned in his arms, then rested her head against his resilient shoulder.
“Yes and something else.”
“What else?”
Zion lifted her chin, compelling her to meet his eyes.
“I didn’t want to acknowledge how selfish I was being,” he said, leaning down and placing a warm, soft kiss on her lips. “I want you to be happy in those four or five decades you have left, Lela, but I don’t want you to find happiness in the arms of another man.”
“I have no desire to mate with anyone else, or to take a lover,” she reassured, initiating another kiss, a desperate embrace full of a wife’s integrity and denial. “I can’t imagine being with anyone other than you. I love you, Zion. I could never love another.”
He knew she spoke the truth. He believed her, but she didn’t understand. Zion did. He’d experienced the loss of a spouse.
“When Iman died, a part of me died with her. Like you, I thought there would never be anyone else for me. And that was true for a long time—”
Lela shook her head in protest, not allowing Zion to continue. “Don’t.” A heartbreaking plea. “Don’t say such things. There will never be anyone else for me.”
Zion saw the near panic in her upturned face, her Picasso marble eyes glowing with resolution and despair.
“It’s not the same. It just isn’t.”
It was exactly the same. Yes, what he felt for Iman was different from the love he had for Lela. But it was love all the same. Loving Lela didn’t mean Iman ceased to occupy a special place in his heart and mind. A small, warm piece of her and their life together would always be a part of him. As he would always be a part of Lela, but she couldn’t see it, not now. But someday. Zion didn’t want to think about that and clearly, neither did his wife.
 review
 The concept of soul mates is not a new one. Plato explored the idea in his Symposium and it is a concept present in much romantic fiction. Typically, however, soul mates are people fated to be together throughout time, even before they meet. That is a nice, romantic, idealistic notion, but I think I prefer ND Jones’ take on the subject. In Bound Souls, we are introduced a literally alien culture. There are rituals for all things, especially those pertaining to mating, and one of those rituals allows a mated pair to bind their souls together so that they will be guaranteed to be together after death. The trouble arises when one spouse still lives after their soul-bonded mate dies. How that knot is untangled involves the meat of the story, so I will allow the reader to explore that for themselves.
The setting, while definitely alien, is internally consistent enough that I did not feel like I couldn’t understand what was going on. My occasional confusion arose from the flashbacks throughout the novel because I did not realize I was reading about the past at first and that popped me out of the flow of the story the first couple of times. Without giving any spoilers I do feel I need to say that the ending was a little schmaltzy for my taste. For a romance novel about bound souls, there are no explicit sex scenes, so the book can be enjoyed by readers 14+ who enjoy a philosophical take on the afterlife.
Excerpt:
Chapter 1
Deidre climbed
the stairs to his loft and rang the bell. The door slid open. Inside, he was
waiting.
Strong, young,
and handsome, he had brown hair that flowed down to his shoulders that she
loved to flip in her fingers. His tan coat was covered with flecks of paint,
but was set off with a large, dark blue cravat. He always let his work spoil
his clothes. It was his charm. He glowed with a smile when he met her eyes.
“Deidre, my
love. What brings you to Montmartre today?”
“You,” she
answered as she walked through the doorway, pushing him back toward the bed.
“You are my
little vixen,” he said as he removed his cravat with a flick of his wrist.
“Do me a favor?
Hurry.”
He grabbed her
around the waist, but held up a hand to stall their descent onto the bed. An
expert at releasing a woman from frivolous garments, he expertly undid each of
her many pearl buttons, slowly, teasing her, as her silk dress began to fall
free. One tantalizing kiss followed another as he progressed down her until the
dress fell to the floor with a chorus of burgundy silk ruffles. After an
admiring gaze, he swung her onto the bed.
She turned to
see Philippe looking at her, his eyes focused on her bosoms as they peeked out
from the top of the tight corset, swelling with each breath she took. Though
she wanted to be free from its confines, she enjoyed teasing him with
anticipation. She rolled onto her side, her hair starting to unravel from her
pins, watching his reaction as he watched her. She smiled as he descended upon
her. “What are you looking at?”
“Something I
would love to paint.”
He lowered
himself down and kissed her gently with firm lips. She reached for his jaw
line, caressing it. Moving his hand down her leg, he slipped his fingers into
the top of one stocking and then the other, slowly rolling them down her legs,
kissing the insides of her warm thighs as he went. She reached down and pulled
on his hair, encouraging him to return. As he rose, he began to unlace her
corset, freeing her breasts, exposing her pert nipples. She caressed the front
of his chest, feeling the definition, the flatness of his belly. She stopped at
his waist, looking up with a smile.
“Should I
continue?” she whispered.
 review
Deidre is a timenaunt, her mission is to jump into the past to research and learn about lost arts. She has just recently lost her partner and is still trying get used to traveling through time on her own. Deidre is attacked and could have been killed if it weren’t for Max. She learns from her rescuer that she has been targeted. She should have dies and now that Max has intervened they have changes history. The counsel has sent a team to fix what was changed, which they may or may not be successful.
This book was very hard for me to follow. Not only were the characters jumping through time but so was the story. It was a bit all over and you were introduced to many characters that were really not needed for the story. It was very scattered and had a lot of fillers for what could have been a really good solid storyline. After finishing, everything came together but just moved way too fast. It still was a good read.
I would give this 3 stars.
