For a split second, I thought about not stopping. I could just keep on driving and forget I ever saw her.

I fell to my side as I saw feet coming towards me. Black booted ones. Strong arms scooped me up, a chest to lean against. I listened to a heart beating, thump, thump, thump, its rhythm making me feel at ease. Was it a policeman? A neighbor? Or perhaps an EMT? I did not know. I closed my eyes as my heart slowed and when I woke up again I was laying on a sandy shoreline, black sky overhead with lighting crackling through it like thin spidery fingers. I was gifted this book in exchange for an honest review.
We start this book learning how Tremaine and Liz first meet. Often it is the worst of circumstances that the strongest of bonds are forged from. Liz has had quite the life of turmoil, causing mistrust of everyone. Trem finds her a family to live with but little does he know that family has deeply buried secrets as well.
I loved the connections in this book and fell for Tremaine’s bad ass protector mode as well as Robert’s devotion. Liz has the best of both worlds if she would let them in. The problem for Liz is how does she choose between the two most important people in her life. While she is trying to sort out her love life, she is also running from James (the most defile creature). She believes that her wards have been enough to keep him out, but will it all fall into place in the end?
Brandy has surprised me yet again with the romance in this book. When you find yourself rooting for certain characters, cheering on success, screaming at failure, you know a book has you in its’ clutches. I give this book 4.5 fangs and cannot wait to fall in love with yet another Other of Edenton.

“C’mon.” Zoe smiled kindly, threading her arm through mine. “I haven’t seen you this down before. Ever.”
“What do you want me to say, Zo? I don’t know. Here’s me,” I held out a hand, “and here’s my wits end.” I clapped both together.
“He’s got the hots for a girl, Will style,” Frank said and I remembered our short convo the night before at the studio. The ‘I saw her first’ shenanigans.
“So, what are you gunna do about it?” Zoe asked, pulling my hands down. She knew this already from our awkward deep and meaningful at the studio.
“Tonight?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Yeah.”
“Talking is a good start,” I huffed. I’d already planned it.
“Try not to be a smart ass,” Frank suggested.
I scoffed. “Thanks for the advice, mate.”
He grinned stupidly at me as the car pulled out front of the restaurant. “Any time.”
As he got out, Zoe lent into me and whispered, “Never take advice from a drummer.” Despite myself, I let out a laugh and she slapped me on the chest. “That’s my Dee.”
As we stood on the footpath and the others joined us, she let me go and went over to Will. As my eyes followed my best friend, they kept going and latched straight onto the woman I’d seen at the studio last night. The woman whose name hadn’t left my head. Jessie. She was standing less than three feet away and she was even more stunning close up. Tall, delicate, almond skin, dark blonde hair that she’d tied up into a messy do at the nape of her neck. She was just as underdressed as I was. Tight back jeans and a slouchy t-shirt, but she had on a black blazer that hugged her waist and stilettos on her feet made her almost as tall as me. I couldn’t have looked away even if I wanted to. There was something about her that just made my eyes latch onto her and not want to let go and I was determined to find out what it was.
She looked up as if she sensed I was staring at her and her eyes met mine and they were just as captivating as the night before. And then she smiled and I knew I was a goner.
“Hey, I’m Jessie,” she said, her accent hitting me like a ton of bricks.
“Hey,” I said, almost choking on that one simple word. She was there with her pretty doe eyes and she split my head in half. Suddenly, I didn’t know what to say and I was reduced to a blubbering idiot.
“What’s your name?” she asked. “I’m sorry we didn’t get a chance to meet yesterday.”
“Dee,” I declared a little too abruptly.
“C’mon, that’s not your real name.” She smiled crookedly, as if she knew the effect she had on me.
“Yes it is,” I scoffed. “D for dangerous. E for enigmatic and E for-”
“Egotistical?”
Damn. “I’ve been called vain, but never egotistical.” I gave her a wink for good measure.
She rolled her pretty brown eyes and shook her head. The other label rep, the one I knew was called Georgie, came out of the restaurant and ushered us in and I lost my chance to say anything else. Probably a good thing because my foot was already in it.

Had I forgotten to lock the door? I never forgot to lock the door. But I was usually not running from my best friend.
Great.
The one time I don’t lock the damn door is the one time a burglar decides to come a calling.
Too bad for mister criminal I had a plan for something like this. I was the kind of girl that always had a plan.
I crept into the bathroom, being as quiet as I could and reached into the cabinet. I pulled out my weapons (hey, all the crap that women have to do to themselves to look good definitely qualify as weapons.) and gripped them closely to my chest with both hands.
My heart was beating so hard against my ribs that it actually hurt and I had to work to not gasp for breath. Catching my intruder by surprise was key to my plan.
Moving quickly through the dark I moved to the bedroom door, leaning against the wall and peering out into the darkened hallway. I could see the top of the stairs from where I stood, as well as the railing that ran alongside the hallway to keep someone from falling into the stairwell from upstairs.
Courtesy of the nightlight down in the entry way (it came in handy when I wanted a drink in the middle of the night) I saw a shadow move against the wall, the figure was large and distorted against the tall bare wall of the stairwell.
Up until that point I hadn’t been certain someone was in the house.
But now I couldn’t deny it.
There was a robber in my house.
He for sure had nefarious plans.
Too bad for him I had a really shitty night and wasn’t in the mood.
As his foot stepped on the bottom stairs I slinked out of the door and along the wall, keeping my eyes trained on the top of the stairs. He began climbing the stairs (I was very unimpressed with his quietness, or rather lack thereof.) and as he climbed I slipped along the wall, moving through the darkness until I was standing in the corner directly across from the top of the stairs.
I saw his shoulders appear as he continued upwards. He was wearing a dark coat and a dark hat… he was nothing but a large ominous shape in the night.
I swallowed, the sound of my saliva scraping down my dry throat made me wince and my palms were sweaty, causing me to tighten my grip on my weapons.

“These graphics suck,” George says and I look back at the screen. We’re standing in the middle of the Estate, colorful orbs quivering ahead of us. We each have to choose our starting advantage. Waterfalls shimmer in the distance and the sunlight streams over multicolored stones in the courtyard.
“Amateurs,” Lanyon concurs. “I mean, they couldn’t have five waterfalls?”
“Your ironic wit is mind blowing, but choose your damn orbs,” I tell them. I consider. Magic, defense, offense, stealth, and charisma. I always go for magic as a black mage, but I wonder if a druid needs something else. Screw it. I need charisma in real life, too.
“Charisma?” Lanyon asks. “No one ever picks charisma.”
“We’re a party of a thief, druid, and a bard. We’re screwed regardless.”
“You two underestimate the mighty power of my lute,” George argues.
“Did you start with charisma?” Lanyon asks.
“Hell, no. I have charisma in spades. I started with stealth.”
“Great. A stealthy bard,” I sigh.
“She’s right,” Lanyon concedes. “We’re screwed.”
However, it actually isn’t bad at all at first. We power through the Estate and make it to the Yobanaria Dale with no resurrections and all at level ten. I’m impressed. George hasn’t actually fought anything, but he has some pretty awe-inspiring charm mastery already. I think I might have a serious crush. He seals the deal when he buffs my hailstorm spell without even being asked.
“Can you guys watch El Thiefelo? My mom wants me to eat supper,” Lanyon says.
“Yeah, we’ve got it,” I tell him. “The first boss is in the elven ruins anyway, so we should grind a bit. I think he’s a twelve.”
George and I explore the Dale, taking out bats and Joba spores. It’s fairly quiet, except for when we combo with his charms and my spells and he yells out, “Eat lute, bitch,” but it’s nice. We work well, almost inherently understanding each other. I’ve never been able to play this effectively with anyone. I try not to think about his eyes. Stupid boys, being cute and stuff.
By the time Lanyon comes back, we’re all at level 12, although Lanyon leveled up just by standing by a door while we played. Still, we are ready to take on Balsa the Proud. As a black mage, it took me about nine seconds. Trees don’t like fire. However, druids don’t have the same level of black magic and all elemental magic is weakened by the need to draw from the elements nearby. Sadly, trees seem to avoid storing fire runes in their villages. I expect this to be a little more challenging. It might even take fifteen seconds.
“First boss. Also known as the freebie bitch to sucker the young folks into a false sense of security,” Lanyon announces as he runs into the center of Balsa’s lair. The cinema plays and then, in a moment of pure absurdity, El Thiefelo is squished as Balsa steps on him.
“Can someone revive me?” Lanyon whines.

Sarah Daltry writes about the regular people who populate our lives. She’s written works in various genres – romance, erotica, fantasy, horror.
