Excerpt:
Lukas’s fingers brushed the back of her neck as he helped her into her coat, and she shivered. She zipped it herself, not willing to let him go that far. She slid on a pair of light gloves since they were only walking a few yards.
Dio bounded out in front of them. They were quiet as they walked, both lost in their own thoughts. He held the door open for Tess, and she smelled the tomato and garlic.
“Smells good.”
“Thanks,” he said, taking her coat from her. “I make a pretty good chicken parmesan.”
He cooked too. Tess creased her eyebrows. This guy was too good to be true.
“You okay?” he asked.
“Yeah, but is there anything you aren’t good at?”
He chuckled. “Plenty. Stick around long enough, and you’ll see my faults. Trust me.”
She followed him into the kitchen and hoped for a second that there might be a chance for the two of them to develop into more than just friends. But that seemed highly unlikely. He pulled two plates out of the cupboard.
“Do you mind if we eat at the bar?”
Tess shook her head and hoisted herself on one of the stools.
He pulled a huge pan of chicken parmesan out of the oven.
“Were you planning on feeding a family?” she asked without thinking.
He frowned. “No, I like leftovers. That way I only have to cook once a week.”
Tess runs from Florida with a big secret and shame in her heart to the last place where she would run into anyone she would know or anyone that she would easily fit in her old life. She needs a new start. And Mackinac Island, Michigan seemed like the perfect place, until she gets there and realizes she’s ill equipped being born and bred in Florida. Yet, the school master who hired her set her up with a landlord who somehow took mercy on this poor beach bunny and got her semi settled so she didn’t freeze any important body parts off. If it wasn’t for her current circumstances that brought her to this frigid ice land and the fact that she had sworn off all men, she would have thought that Lukas was hot. But, that was the old Tess, the new Tess has priorities and a life to live. But Lukas just keeps coming around and she can’t keep denying that she is starting to develop feelings for him, even when some of the townspeople say he’s a hard case. She knows that he’s got a secret of his own and hers will come out soon enough whether she tells him or not. Can they have a relationship or will their secrets freeze any chance of happiness before they can even kindle the spark?
